Experienced P&C Field Services Technician
About the role
This Opportunity Supports a wide range of testing and commissioning activities through application of client testing standards, industry standards (IEEE, NETA, NFPA, NESC), and manufacturer recommendations.
Responsibilities
- Perform assigned testing and commissioning tasks for Protection and Control systems on high voltage substations
- Perform on-site hands-on protective relay testing using relay test sets such as Omicron CMC 256/356 or Doble F6150. Examples of relays to be tested are SEL-311L, SEL-387, SEL-487, SEL-421, SEL-351S, GE L90, GE D60 among others
- Use field forms, digital data tools, and mobile applications to document site activities
- Support the Project Lead or Field Supervisor on projects
- Escalate complex technical problems or unexpected field conditions to the site lead or project manager
- Communicate progress, field observations, and potential delays to the project team
- May review the work of less experienced technicians for quality and accuracy, providing informal guidance as needed
- Maintain attention to detail when filling out logs, photo documentation, and label entries
- Collaborate with other technicians to maintain workflow, safety, and quality standards
- Aid in monitoring subcontractor performance and activities and report observations to field leadership
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in the electrical testing industry, including experience in medium and high voltage circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and substation protection and controls testing
- Demonstrable expertise on transmission, generation, and distribution relays (SEL, Basler, Beckwith, and GE families) and protective schemes
- Technical skills related to protective relays include relay calibration utilizing test sets/measuring devices such as Omicron CMC 256/356 and Doble F6150, control scheme testing, testing of the sensing CT/PT circuits, ability to upload settings to microprocessor relays, and static & dynamic testing of microprocessor-based protective relays
- Proven experience with electrical field testing standards, practices, and procedures, such as NETA, IEEE, and NFPA applicable standards
- Proven experience with testing electrical distribution, generation, and transmission projects with voltage levels ranging from 15 kV to 500 kV, including protective relays and circuit breakers
- Experience using technical software such as ProTesT, Protection Suite, ENOSERV RTS, Omicron Test Universe, and AcSELerator Quickset for testing purposes and data review
- Ability to read and understand electrical drawings
- Physical stamina to work in outdoor and physically demanding conditions
- Skilled in preparing field logs, sketches, and digital reports
- Experience collaborating with contractors, technicians, and engineers
- Commitment to field safety, quality, and regulatory compliance
- Good interpersonal and verbal communication skills for field team collaboration
- Capable of critical thinking and problem-solving skills to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from inspection and testing results
- Ability to support a wide variety of tasks in dynamic or changing environments
- Ability to follow procedures, meet deadlines, and maintain accountability in the field
- Commitment to continued learning and development in technical field services
- Understanding of confidentiality and ethical behavior in technical environments
- Certified in OSHA 30-hour or 40-hour HAZWOPER
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Technology degree in a similar discipline
- Experience in testing and troubleshooting electromechanical relay
- Experience in testing and commissioning electrical equipment on high voltage substations such as CTs, CCVTs, PLC systems, and DC systems, including batteries and battery chargers

Pay
Expected Salary (all locations): $50.00 - $70.00 per hour
