About the role
Karen is a 53-year-old woman who lives at home with the support of her family. She has a diagnosed severe learning disability and Autism. Karen is selectively mute but will converse with trusted family members. She communicates with others through written communication and technology.
Karen enjoys listening to 80’s music, particularly "Starship" and Duran Duran. She likes going out for social drinks, attending the Fresh Disco, watching TV soaps like Casualty and Mrs. Brown’s Boys, and can become focused on routines in a repetitive manner. Changes or cancellations to her support at short notice may cause anxiety, so routine and consistency are essential.
Responsibilities
- Accompany Karen to her chosen social activities, including trips to the Metro Centre, cinema visits, lunch dates, days out to the beach, and exploring new places of interest.
- Safely transport Karen on public transport, including buses, ferries, and the metro, to access the community.
- Assist and encourage Karen with personal hygiene care, including prompting and assistance with showering, haircare, and toileting hygiene.
- Support Karen with dressing and choosing weather-appropriate garments.
- Encourage and assist Karen with healthy eating, exercising, and meal preparation.
- Accompany Karen to scheduled appointments and make bookings on her behalf as required.
- Demonstrate strategies to manage dysregulation, particularly in response to changes in routine or support.
Requirements
- Experience working with adults with autism is essential.
- Ability to demonstrate strategies for managing dysregulation.
- Must be able to transport Karen safely on public transport.
- Permission to work in the U.K. at the time of starting employment.
