This is a Special Appointment position serving at the pleasure of the Appointing Authority, located at 100 S. Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21201 (Grade 19).

About the Role

The main purposes of this position are to enforce the regulations of the State Athletic Commission, administer the office of the Commission, and manage staff at Commission-sanctioned events. Responsibilities are directly linked to protecting the safety of all competing contestants and ensuring fairness and equity in all decisions rendered by the Commission.

Responsibilities

  • At Commission-sanctioned combative sports events:
    • Supervise a staff of up to approximately 25 individuals, including referees, judges, physicians, and inspectors.
    • Enforce regulations and oversee contests.
    • Compile official data and respond to medical issues.
    • Schedule and manage medical examinations and drug testing for contestants.
  • Review, certify, and approve the issuance of licenses; serve as the official custodian of records for the Commission.
  • Convey and exchange information and critical data with licensees via telephone, email, U.S. mail, and facsimile to enforce Commission regulations.
  • Prepare all required documents for the regulation of Commission-sanctioned combative sports events.
  • Administer the day-to-day management of the office.
  • Serve as the principal liaison for business negotiations with promoters involved in boxing, MMA, and wrestling seeking to hold events in Maryland.
  • Supervise the fiscal management of the Commission on a daily basis.
  • Prepare the Commission budget for review and approval by the Commissioner of Occupational and Professional Licensing (O&P).
  • Devise and implement fiscal and administrative changes to promote efficiency and reduce Commission costs.
  • Account for all monies received by and expended by the Commission.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Experience: Five years of customer service experience in administrative staff or professional work.

Qualifications

Strong preference will be given to applicants possessing the following qualifications. Include clear and specific information on your application regarding these:

  • Experience in supervision.
  • Experience overseeing and coordinating general operations.
  • Experience with special funds budgets and all personnel actions from recruitment to termination.
  • Experience interpreting and applying State Government laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Experience with combative sports such as boxing, wrestling, MMA, or Muay Thai.
  • Experience with AS400 Licensing system, Google, and Microsoft suites.

Special Requirements

  • All candidates are subject to a background check against files maintained by the Division of Unemployment Insurance (LABOR/DUI) to determine if any monies are owed to LABOR/DUI due to unemployment overpayment or fraud. Any unpaid debt may impact employment eligibility.
