About the Role

A Civil Helper will assist the journeyman to complete tasks, including laying out, assembling, and assisting in complex tasks. Helpers learn mathematical functions and their applications specific to their craft, and are able to properly identify and safely use hand tools, power tools, equipment, and procedures. At Level IV, the helper is competent to complete Journeyman-level Civil Craft tasks with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Assist with selecting scaffold component sizes, types, and related materials such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders according to specifications.
• Select gear, such as cables, pulleys, and winches, based on load weight, size, facilities, and work schedule.
• Assemble and install supporting structures, rigging, hoists, and pulling gear using hand and power tools.
• Bolt or screw sections together and assist with erecting and dismantling scaffolding; inspect and sort scaffolding as required.
• Assist with erecting handrails, walkways, and gangways in conjunction with formwork.
• Fabricate and care for rigging, such as slings, tackle, and ladders, using hand and power tools.
• Operate a transit/level to set grades for paving forms, establish sub-grade, and set grade pens for finished concrete.
• Assist with placing and finishing concrete to the correct grade, ensuring proper drainage and smooth ride quality that adheres to all City, State, and Federal Standards.
• Pour, smooth, and level concrete using rakes, trowels, floats, and screeds.
• Prepare the layout of forms or fixtures using lines or grades.
• Set up hoisting equipment for raising and placing scaffold components.
• Set forms for alleys, streets, driveways, sidewalks, ADA ramps, inlets, curbs, and concrete structure improvements.
• Polish concrete surfaces using a power surfacing machine.
• Assist with tying rebar and determining the number, size, shape, and location of reinforcing rods from blueprints, sketches, or oral instructions.
• Load, transport, and unload materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
• Maintain and upkeep scaffolding materials in proper order.
• Assist in lifting, positioning, and securing materials and workpieces during installation.
• Assist in welding reinforcing bars together using arc-welding equipment.
• Build or reinforce forms or bracing before pours.
• Load and unload scaffold components and equipment.
• Mix cement or epoxy grouts using a concrete mixing machine or hoe.
• Perform minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment.
• Signal concrete deliverers to position trucks for pouring.
• Nail cleats (braces) across boards to construct concrete-supporting forms.
• Interpret flat drawings or diagrams and visualize them as solid objects.
• Operate electric and pneumatic tools.
• Position and secure steel bars in concrete forms to reinforce concrete.
• Safely operate power vibrators to compact concrete.
• Use carpentry hand tools such as hammers, levels, squares, screwdrivers, adjustable wrenches, hand and power saws, drill motors, and pry bars.
• Verify structural accuracy using transit, plumb bob, square, and level.
• Verify vertical and horizontal alignment of scaffold components using plumb bob, level, or other instruments.
• Demonstrate Yates Core Values and Principles and follow the Yates Code of Conduct.

Safety Responsibilities

• Refuse unsafe work and carry out all work according to established Yates Safety Procedures and Work Practices.
• Report all incidents, near hits, and hazards to management.
• Wear and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Advise fellow employees of hazardous situations.
• Participate in workplace inspections.
• Comply with statutory requirements, including duty of care.
• Participate in required and assigned safety training.
• Provide suggestions to improve safety.

• Attend prestart and safety meetings and contribute.

Requirements

• Ability to read and interpret instructions and documentation.
• Possess personal hand tools required for the craft as established on the Yates Industrial Minimum Tool List.
• Apply basic mathematical skills.
• Work within precise standards of accuracy.
• Compare and see differences in size, shape, and form of lines, figures, and objects.
• Successful completion of required safety training, including but not limited to Confined Space, LOTO, and Working at Heights.

Qualifications

• Level IV: Thirty-six (36) or more months of heavy industrial-related civil experience.
• Level III: Twenty-four (24) to thirty-five (35) months of heavy industrial-related civil experience.
• Level II: Twelve (12) to twenty-three (23) months of heavy industrial-related civil experience.
• Level I: Zero (0) to eleven (11) months of heavy industrial-related civil experience, plus one (1) year of industrial experience.
• Other verified experiences or certifications with civil craft experience.

Physical Demands

• Work in all weather conditions at varying temperatures.
• Work at varying elevations, in windy and dusty environments, and with moderate to high noise levels.
• Work on project sites containing light to heavy equipment vehicles, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment, and tools.
• Wear safety-approved body harnesses when working at 4 feet or above.
• Stand, walk, bend, squat, climb, and lift for extended periods.
• Talk and hear to communicate effectively.
• Use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, and pull objects, materials, controls, and tools.
• Lift, carry, and move heavy objects up to 25 lbs.
• Use vision abilities to focus, see short and long distances, distinguish colors, perceive depth, and use peripheral vision.
