Event/On-Call Laborer
Job Summary
Facilities Services is seeking hourly intermittent temporary employment for multiple positions ending on or before June 30, 2026. Positions may be reappointed based on operational needs and job performance.
Job Duties
- Moves heavy objects and performs manual labor on campus using various moving equipment and tools; loads and unloads furniture, equipment, packing boxes, supplies and various materials as directed.
- Uses a variety of hand tools to dismantle office furniture and reassemble in new locations.
- Aids in campus event set up and breakdown, including preparation of sites.
- Assists in recycling by removing recyclables from central locations, preparing, delivering, and picking up recycling containers at campus events and for special site clean-up.
- Organizes, maintains, sanitizes recycling containers, bins, vehicles, cleans and maintains the Facilities Resource Center and baler site.
- Adheres to workflow continuity and recycle pickup and disposal schedules of bins from outside vendors.
- Ensures safety of volunteers (students and alternate work program) working in support of the Recycling Program, ensuring proper hygiene, weight handling, vehicle operation, and accident prevention.
- Operates cardboard baler, 5th wheel pickup truck with trailer, and forklift.
- Operates 5th wheel pickup truck and trailer unit for waste management purposes, collects garbage and empties trash cans, operates waste compaction system, cardboard baler, blower, forklift, pressure washer, and backhoe.
- Moves and relocates 800 to 1000 pound wheeled dumpsters with and without assistance; pushes dumpsters a distance of 50 feet at times.
- Performs general upkeep of campus buildings, including cleaning assigned areas, removing construction debris, cleaning gutters, culverts, and other drainage structures, operating pressure washer, cleaning roadsides, streets, and related outdoor and indoor areas, and assisting in other cleaning projects as assigned.
- Assists crafts and construction workers by performing unskilled tasks such as preparing work areas, performing rough repair work, tearing down structures, patching pavement, performing pick and shovel work.
- Assists in grounds maintenance such as pruning, trimming, and spraying, removing undergrowth and debris, using spade, hoe, rake, or other equipment as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- No formal education or experience required.
- Must possess the ability to use a variety of hand tools to dismantle and reassemble office furniture in a timely manner.
- Must have the ability to use a wide variety of powered equipment.
- Must adhere to all safety procedures and guidelines.
- Must work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Must establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, faculty, students, and visitors using excellent communication and customer service skills.
- Must precisely follow oral and written instructions and organize work assignments to work effectively and efficiently.
- Must adapt to changes in work environment and assignments.
- Must operate a 5th wheel truck and trailer unit for waste management purposes.
- Must dismantle office furniture using powered and non-powered hand tools.
- Must move/push 4 yard dumpsters.
- Must pull out a 75 pound bag of trash or recycling receptacle.
- Must operate the cardboard baler.
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license.

Salary
Anticipated salary will be $21.62 per hour (step 5). Future increases, including step advancement, are subject to contract negotiations. (Full classification range: $19.97 - $27.42 per hour)
