The Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD) is a fully accredited school for Deaf and hard-of-hearing students in nursery school through high school, accredited by AdvancED Indiana and the Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the Deaf (CEASD). It serves approximately 342 students, with about 60% residing on campus during the academic year. ISD offers a full range of social activities, including sports, clubs, and organizations.

About the role

The Residential Leader provides supervision and support to residential staff, ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of students while maximizing programming opportunities. This position requires Intermediate proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and operates on a 2nd shift schedule, with hours arranged by the supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure smooth operation of residential programs by providing adequate coverage through scheduling, approval of activity sheets, transportation requests, requisitions, and other student and staff requests.
  • Participate in all student life team meetings and maintain contact with students, residential staff, educational staff, support staff, and parents.
  • Make recommendations or decisions for budgetary needs within the student life area and maintain inventories of general supplies and equipment.
  • Design programs to meet students' needs, incorporating an understanding of student development for preschool through high school.
  • Promote and oversee the implementation of student programming in the residential setting following the nine student development dimensions: cultural, emotional, intellectual, life planning, physical, political, sexual, social, and spiritual.
  • Assume total administrative responsibility for residential hall management.
  • Follow emergency procedures for fires, storms, tornado drills, and warnings.
  • Attend Individualized Education Program/Annual Case Review and/or case conferences to ensure students' developmental needs are met.
  • Ensure all after-work-hour duties are assigned for weekend work, chaperone bus duties, and chauffeur assignments.
  • Develop Behavior Improvement Plans and oversee Homework Improvement Plans.
  • Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

Requirements

  • Basic understanding of the characteristics, needs, and effective methods of guidance for students of varying ages, stages of development, and levels of mental ability.
  • Thorough knowledge of state, federal, and agency rules and regulations.
  • Working knowledge of administrative and personnel management techniques related to effective supervision and direction of programs.
  • Ability to plan student development programs that best meet their needs.
  • Effective communication, both orally and in writing.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
