Location: East Ridge Elementary (Coralville, IA) – start of the 2026-2027 school year.
About the Role
Assist teachers in the instruction, supervision, and care of students with disabilities in special education, general education, and work/community settings to enhance student learning, promote school efficiency, and maximize educational opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Attend work promptly and regularly
- Maintain confidentiality and harmonious working relationships with students, staff, and the public
- Assist classroom teachers with educational activities and follow directions from teachers/administrators
- Implement and monitor students’ Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behavior management plans
- Maintain students’ daily behavior logs and chart/graph student performance
- Prepare and organize instructional materials and equipment
- Perform personal care duties (e.g., feeding, toileting) for students with disabilities
- Supervise students during bus loading/unloading, including riding the bus and implementing behavior intervention plans
- Assist in maintaining a safe and orderly instructional environment
- Supervise lunchroom, playground, halls, classrooms, and other assigned areas
- Clarify and reinforce teacher directions; assist with student assignments
- Participate in IEP meetings as required
- Assist with instruction in community/work settings and supervise students in these environments
- Listen to students read, read to students, and organize daily student work folders
- Prepare attendance cards and reports
- Under teacher direction, implement strategies to maintain/increase appropriate behavior and de-escalate inappropriate behavior
- Lift, carry, and correctly position students with physical disabilities
- Perform other duties as assigned by the building Principal or teachers
Qualifications
- Previous experience working with children preferred but not required
- Post-secondary coursework in an educational field preferred but not required
- Initiative to be a self-starter
- Intuitive to the needs of students
- Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, support staff, administrators, AEA, and parents as part of an educational team
- Flexibility in assignments and good judgment when unexpected problems arise
- Ability to use office equipment
