About the role

The Environmental Service Technician Registry is responsible for cleaning assigned areas throughout John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital. This role applies the 10-Step cleaning process using approved equipment, chemicals, supplies, and methods to maintain a safe, clean, and attractive environment for patients, guests, and staff. The position provides high-quality care, service, and kindness while performing duties in a highly confidential manner, aligned with the mission and values of Cook County Health & Hospitals System (CCHHS). This position is exempt from Career Service under the CCHHS Personnel Rules.

Responsibilities

• Follows the 10-step cleaning process to support disinfection and sterilization throughout the hospital.
• Ensures appropriate caution/safety signs are properly set up prior to performing cleaning duties.
• Cleans floors including sweeping, dusting, damp/wet mopping, and disinfecting.
• Cleans windows/mirrors in patient rooms, bathrooms, and other assigned areas.
• Cleans, washes, sanitizes, and/or polishes bathroom fixtures, ensuring water marks are removed.
• Cleans/polishes furniture and shelves in assigned rooms and other areas as instructed.
• Cleans walls by wiping, dusting, spot cleaning, and disinfecting.
• Ensures work/cleaning schedules are followed and all accidents/incidents are reported.
• Adheres to established infection control and universal precautions.
• Keeps work areas free of hazardous objects (e.g., protruding mop/broom handles, unnecessary equipment). Ensures all equipment is stored at least 6 inches from the floor and 18 inches from the ceiling.
• Maintains confidentiality of all patient information.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED (proof must be provided at time of interview).
• Two (2) years of cleaning experience in environmental services within a healthcare environment.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with diverse staff and a multicultural patient population.

• Ability to respond to emergency clean-up requests.

• Ability to tolerate exposure to unpleasant noise, odors, and temperatures.
• Physical ability to walk extensively, lift moderately heavy objects, and climb stairs.
• Ability to consistently push, pull, twist, turn, bend, kneel, stoop, lift, reach above the shoulders, and stand for prolonged periods.

Pay

$23.00 per hour

Schedule

7:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Veteran Preference

Preference is given to honorably discharged Veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces for at least 6 continuous months. To qualify, Veterans must:

• Identify as a Veteran on the employment application.
• Attach a copy of their DD 214, DD 215, or NGB 22 (Notice of Separation) at the time of application. If multiple documents exist, submit the one with the latest date. Coast Guard Veterans must submit a certified copy of military separation from the Department of Transportation (pre-9/11) or Department of Homeland Security (post-9/11). Discharge papers must list an Honorable Discharge status.
• Alternatively, a copy of a valid State ID Card or Driver’s License identifying the holder as a Veteran may be attached. Original discharge papers or applicable ID must be presented at the time of interview.
