About the role

The Environmental Scientist will work in Certerra Southwest’s Reno, NV office, supporting senior team leaders through field and office duties. Project assignments will primarily involve locations throughout Arizona, requiring travel and occasional overnight stays. This role offers on-the-job training and opportunities to expand your skill set in environmental consulting.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field sampling and inspections for soil, groundwater, air, and building materials.
  • Perform Phase I Environmental Site Assessments (ASTM E1527-21), including historical records review, site reconnaissance, and technical report preparation.
  • Execute Phase II environmental investigations, including soil, groundwater, and soil vapor sampling under project manager direction.
  • Conduct asbestos building inspections and bulk sampling in accordance with AHERA and state regulatory requirements.
  • Perform lead-based paint inspections and risk assessments using XRF analyzers and paint chip sampling techniques.
  • Monitor indoor air quality (IAQ), collecting samples for VOCs, mold spores, particulate matter, and other contaminants.
  • Document field activities through notes, photographs, and site sketches.
  • Communicate with clients and contractors during field activities.

Requirements

  • Background in environmental science, biology, chemistry, industrial hygiene, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of experience in environmental or industrial hygiene consulting.
  • Experience with environmental sampling techniques for soil, groundwater, air, and building materials.
  • Knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations (EPA, OSHA, ADEQ, etc.).
  • Strong technical writing and data organization skills.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and obtain medical clearance for physical work.

Qualifications

  • Certifications such as AHERA Building Inspector, AHERA Contractor/Supervisor, Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor, or 40-hour HAZWOPER are preferred.
  • Physical ability to stoop, kneel, and routinely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to work in variable outdoor conditions, including extreme heat or cold.
