Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator

About the role

This role reports to the Associate Director of Risk Management and supports the University’s mission and vision through the development and implementation of environmental health, occupational health, safety, and compliance programs to fulfill regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Build, implement, and monitor environmental health, occupational health, safety, and compliance functions for Bowie State University, including inspections, evaluations, and advisement on facilities, equipment, materials, activities, and processes for compliance with university, local, state, and federal laws, codes, standards, or regulations.
• Serve as a point of contact and liaise with national, state, and local agencies, university-level compliance entities, and the University’s risk management and insurance providers to ensure compliance with codes, standards, or regulations.
• Conduct research, analysis, interpretation, and communication on local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to compliance with environmental health, occupational health, and safety management programs.
• Develop, implement, maintain, and update programs, policies, procedures, mandates, and initiatives that preserve compliance with codes, standards, or regulations in coordination with designated university departments.
• Monitor emerging legislation and regulations with potential impact on university personnel, workplaces, and environmental, safety, or compliance programs.
• Oversee or perform testing, sampling, or surveys of equipment, materials, or environments; collect and maintain required documentation and records of activities; compile and assess information to prepare reports or briefings.
• Evaluate and develop data management procedures, resources, and tools in accordance with appropriate knowledge and certifications.
• Develop, organize, direct, and participate in meetings, conferences, seminars, training/compliance programs, and committees; provide consultation on compliance programs, policies, standards, or regulations.
• Develop, prepare, and approve training materials or communications related to compliance efforts and programs, including online content.
• Design and coordinate workplace occupational health and safety programs; implement efforts to identify, isolate, or eliminate hazardous operations, materials, or processes.
• Coordinate and participate in responses to spills of hazardous materials and manage hazardous materials waste.
• Implement, maintain, and update emergency management response plans and procedures related to environmental health, occupational health, and safety; participate in mandated drills, investigations, and emergency management roles during crises.
• Assist in the investigation, response, and reporting of complaints, injuries, and incidents; collaborate with and provide information to outside regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA, MOSH, NFPA, ADA, ANSI, ASME) and risk management/insurance providers.
• Travel to sites to conduct root cause analyses and audits, identify risks, and ensure regulatory compliance.
• Work collaboratively with facilities management and across departments to ensure compliance, including generator testing, emergency preparedness training, ergonomics, safety testing/drills, and working with local authorities.
• Alert relevant university departments on unsafe work or practices, recommend stoppage as needed, and review documentation of corrective actions before operations resume.
• Conduct budget oversight, project management, contractor management, safety committee leadership, and annual compliance reporting.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, biological sciences, chemistry, or a closely related field.
• Five years of professional work experience in environmental health, occupational health, safety, or a related field.
• Experience in Loss Control strategies and protocols.
• Experience with overseeing compliance of OSHA regulations.
• General OSHA 10 or General OSHA 30 or other Safety-related certification required.
• HAZWOPER Certification preferred.
• Additional relevant professional certifications such as CSP, ASP, or CHMM preferred.

Skills

• Knowledge of environmental health, occupational health, and safety regulations, equipment, and strategies to promote effective security operations for protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
• Experience with project management and tracking tools.
• Knowledge of uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
• Experience coordinating and/or facilitating trainings for the campus community.
• Strong verbal and written communication.
• Ability to collaborate with influence and instruct across departments and with internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to enter, track, analyze databases, and develop rational conclusions based on relevant information.
• Ability to develop and implement new environmental health and safety programs.
• Ability to supervise personnel and/or projects.

Pay

$80,000 - $90,000

Offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of a due diligence background check and verification of credentials. Proof of U.S. citizenship or eligibility for U.S. employment will be required prior to employment (Immigration Control Act of 1986).
