Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator

This role reports to the Associate Director of Risk Management and will support the University’s mission and vision through the development and implementation of environmental health, occupational health, and safety and compliance programs to fulfill regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Build, implement, and monitor environmental health, occupational health, safety, and compliance programs for Bowie State University, including inspections, evaluations, and advisement on facilities, equipment, materials, activities, and processes to ensure compliance with university, local, state, and federal laws, codes, standards, or regulations.
• Serve as a point of contact and liaison with national, state, and local agencies, university-level compliance entities, and the University’s risk management and insurance providers.
• Conduct research, analysis, interpretation, and communication of local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to environmental health, occupational health, and safety management programs.
• Develop, implement, maintain, and update programs, policies, procedures, mandates, and initiatives to preserve compliance with codes, standards, or regulations in coordination with designated university departments.
• Monitor emerging legislation and regulations with potential impact on university personnel, workplaces, and environmental, safety, or compliance programs.
• Oversee or perform testing, sampling, or surveys of equipment, materials, or environments; collect and maintain required documentation and records; compile and assess data, results, and findings; prepare reports or briefings.
• Develop data management procedures, resources, and tools in accordance with appropriate knowledge and certifications.
• Develop, organize, direct, and participate in meetings, conferences, seminars, training/compliance programs, and committees; provide consultation on compliance programs, policies, standards, or regulations.
• Design and coordinate workplace occupational health and safety programs; identify, isolate, or eliminate hazardous operations, materials, or processes; coordinate responses to spills of hazardous materials and manage hazardous waste.
• Implement, maintain, and update emergency management response plans and procedures; participate in mandated drills, investigations, and emergency management roles during crises.
• Assist in the investigation, response, and reporting of complaints, injuries, and incidents; collaborate with outside regulatory agencies (e.g., OSHA, MOSH, NFPA, ADA, ANSI, ASME) and risk management/insurance providers; conduct site visits, root cause analyses, and audits.
• Work collaboratively with facilities management and across departments to ensure compliance, including generator testing, emergency preparedness training, ergonomics, safety testing/drills, and coordination with local authorities.
• Alert relevant university departments on unsafe work or practices; recommend stoppage as needed and review documentation of corrective actions before operations resume.
• Conduct budget oversight, project management, contractor management, safety committee leadership, and annual compliance reporting.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, environmental health and safety, industrial hygiene, biological sciences, chemistry, or a closely related field.
• Five (5) years of professional work experience in environmental health, occupational health, safety, or a related field.
• Experience in Loss Control strategies and protocols.
• Experience with overseeing compliance of OSHA regulations.
• General OSHA 10/General OSHA 30 or other Safety-related certification required.
• HAZWOPER Certification preferred.
• Additional relevant professional certifications such as CSP, ASP, or CHMM preferred.

Skills

• Knowledge of environmental health, occupational health, and safety regulations, equipment, and strategies to promote effective security operations for protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
• Experience with project management and tracking tools.
• Knowledge of chemical interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
• Experience coordinating and facilitating trainings for the campus community.
• Strong verbal and written communication.
• Ability to collaborate with influence and instruct across departments and with internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to enter, track, analyze databases, and develop conclusions based on relevant information.
• Ability to develop and implement new environmental health and safety programs.
• Ability to supervise personnel and/or projects.

Pay

$80,000 - $90,000
