Essential Duties

  • Patrols assigned area primarily by car, occasionally on foot, bicycle, and motorcycle.
  • Responds to a wide variety of calls and complaints involving automobile accidents, burglaries, theft, robberies, domestic disturbances, assaults, and other misdemeanors and felonies.
  • Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations, contacts and interviews witnesses and victims of a crime, photographs crime scenes, dusts for latent fingerprints, collects evidence, and preserves the chain of evidence.
  • Prepares criminal investigation reports and testifies in court.
  • Performs traffic and parking enforcement functions, observes traffic movement, operates radar speed detection units, directs traffic, and issues traffic citations.
  • Conducts accident investigations to determine the cause of the accident (driver error or mechanical failure).
  • Apprehends violators of City laws and ordinances by arresting suspects, following a complete booking procedure, and using physical force up to and including the use of a firearm.
  • Gives talks, maintains a high degree of visibility, and identifies unusual or abnormal activities to prevent crime.
  • Performs various other duties as assigned, including transporting prisoners to county jails, serving misdemeanor and felony warrants for arrest, crime scene and accident investigation follow-up, parking enforcement, providing information to citizens, and serving special assignments.

Peripheral Duties

  • Covers crime scene and accident investigation follow-up.
  • Engages in parking enforcement, giving talks, providing information to citizens, and serving warrants.
  • Works at a desk, works at a computer terminal, performs special assignments, serves as a detective, crime prevention officer, SWAT team member, or gang unit member.

Qualifications

  • Good working knowledge of City of Mukilteo laws.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to deal with the public in a fair and equal manner.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicle and exit quickly to affect an arrest.
  • Ability to participate in the use of physical force and training for such on a continuing basis.

Minimum Educational And Experience Qualifications

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.
  • United States citizen or lawfully permanent resident.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Current and valid Washington State driver's license within 30 days of hire.
  • Read and write the English language at a skill level commensurate with general law enforcement duties and responsibilities.
  • Pass job-related performance aptitude and physical ability tests.
  • Satisfy psychological and truth detection examinations.
  • Satisfy examinations by licensed healthcare providers to ensure no physical, emotional, sensory, or mental conditions exist which could adversely affect performance of duties, including a drug screen.
  • Driving history free of violations that show a disregard for safe and effective operation of motor vehicles.
  • Criminal record free of convictions which relate to fitness to perform the job of Police Officer.
  • No felony convictions.
  • Other requirements identified by the Mukilteo Civil Service Commission Rules and Regulations.

License Or Certification

  • Washington State Driver License and record acceptable to the City.
  • Successfully pass examinations as required by the Mukilteo Civil Service Commission Rules and Regulations.

Working Conditions

  • Sitting for eight to ten hours a day while operating a patrol vehicle.
  • Contact with irate and combative citizens.
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Occasional physical and verbal response to combative citizens.
  • Physical ability and willingness to affect an arrest or restrain a hostile prisoner.

Additional Compensation

  • Premium Pay - 5% for duty as Corporal, Investigative Officer (Detective), Field Training Officer, Crime Prevention Officer, Youth/Dare Officer, or Administrative Assistant.
  • Education Pay - 2% for AA, 4% for BA/BS.
  • Merit Pay (Longevity Pay) - 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%.
  • Extra Duty Pay.
  • Insurance:
    • Medical Insurance provided through LEOFF Trust. Employer pays 100% of employee premiums and 90% of dependent premiums.
    • Dental and Vision Insurance provided through LEOFF Trust. Employer pays 100% of employee and dependent premiums.
    • Life Insurance value equal to annual salary.
