About the role

The Department of Public Works – Traffic Division in Hilo is seeking an immediate permanent full-time Engineering Support Technician I, SR-11 position. This position works Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Responsibilities

  • Affords assistance in reviewing development proposals.
  • Collects and updates required engineering and water quality data and reports.
  • Maintains and updates bacteriological, turbidity, chemical, and chloride and other related data.
  • Prepares water consumption reports and graphs by systems and subsystems.
  • Performs computations and prepares charts and visual aids.
  • Compares master meter readings with customer meter readings.
  • Affords assistance with surveys and public notifications for customer information and regulation compliance.
  • Assists with inspections of construction for compliance with approved plans and specifications.
  • Maintains physical and electronic files and records.
  • May assist in preparing CAD generated drawings, sketches, and schemes; prepares GIS generated maps and exhibits.
  • Affords assistance with traffic safety and traffic calming investigations, including collecting and compiling data, to assist the Engineer with planning projects to help reduce traffic accidents and lower vehicular speeds.
  • Reviews simple plans and specifications for conformance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, and codes.
  • Affords assistance in the design of simple traffic safety projects.
  • Serves as the contact for the One-Call Center Program.
  • Catalogs and maintains engineering reference materials and information.
  • Meets with the public to answer routine questions regarding availability of water and requirements for service.
  • Might assist with various tasks involving administrative and clerical matters.

Requirements

Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school, and some work experience in engineering-oriented functions such as in data collection and analyses, research, or inspection. Possession of a valid State of Hawai'i Driver License (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver license at the time of filing as applicable to the position. You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire, if the position requires a driver's license. (The immediate vacancy with the Department of Public Works requires a valid driver's license).

Substitution of Education for Required Experience

An Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Engineering Drafting, or CAD may be substituted for the required experience. Note: Foreign transcripts must be accompanied by an official credential evaluation report to determine U.S. equivalency. Examination

All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education, and experience as presented in the application.
