Engineering Manager - Issuing

Adyen · Chicago, IL · 2 days ago
Engineering$18k–$243k/yrFull-time

Adyen provides payments, data, and financial products in a single solution for customers like Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft—making us the financial technology platform of choice. At Adyen, we create an environment with opportunities for our people to succeed, backed by a culture that enables them to truly own their careers. We are motivated individuals who tackle unique technical challenges at scale and solve them as a team.

About the role

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a team in our Issuing organization. The Issuing organization enables businesses to monetize spend by providing fast, secure, and efficient payment solutions through digital and physical card issuance. This is a complex and rapidly evolving offering, giving you the opportunity to influence the vision and strategy, and own the roadmap from the ground up—seeing it through from early build to scaled adoption.

As an engineering leader, you’ll work closely with partners across engineering, product, commercial, and operations to deliver a best-in-class issuing product that serves both enterprise clients and embedded finance partners. This Chicago-based role is part of the broader Financial Services product organization, which owns the full suite of financial products we offer to our customers.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the Roadmap: Develop and execute the technical roadmap for establishing an issuing program construct, able to support the continued expansion of Adyen’s issued card product suite, and translating ambitious business goals into world-class technical reality.
  • Build a team: Establish a new engineering team from the ground up, hiring and shaping the team as required to build a best-in-class engineering culture.
  • Technical Authority and Excellence: Act as a technical leader and domain expert for the banking product, challenging and driving technical design and solutions to ensure an exceptionally high technical bar. You will be the point person for product technical decisions, speaking for the product across the organization and, occasionally, to clients.
  • People & Performance: Coach, mentor, and build a high-performing team of engineers. You will be responsible for continuous performance management, professional development, and maintaining a culture of rapid, top-notch execution.
  • Execution & Ownership: Work closely with Product Managers to manage project timelines while proactively addressing technical debt, and enforcing best engineering practices. You are a driver, not an executor, focused on strategic, quality delivery.
  • Client & Product Focus: Maintain a strong product mindset, deeply understanding our clients' needs, banking industry, and the broader market landscape. You will propose new features and collaboratively shape the future direction of the product.

Requirements

  • People Leadership: 2+ years of experience in people management, with a proven ability to build, maintain, and constructively coach high-performance engineering teams.
  • Domain Expertise: Experience working in the FinTech domain with exposure to Issuing and/or Banking. Alternatively, experience managing the technical delivery of a highly critical, global product at scale.
  • Technical Depth: You possess a high technical bar and in-depth knowledge of how to build and scale a world-class, API-based financial service. You should be comfortable discussing and challenging decisions made by Senior+ engineers, and working with our tech stack—Java, Postgres, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Redis, Elastic.
  • Execution Mindset: Strong execution skills are paramount. This includes effective communication, stakeholder management (internal and external), and leveraging strategic thinking to solve problems and get things done.
  • Collaboration & Influence: Proven ability to lead complex projects involving multiple teams and external partners (e.g., bank rails, third-party vendors such as Zelle and Plaid), demonstrating strong influencing and strategic thinking skills.
  • Customer Care: You deeply care about the customer experience and take pride in your and your team’s work that delivers a delightful experience.

Pay

The annual base salary range for this role is $180,000 - $243,000 in Chicago, plus RSUs.
