About the Role
This work unit maintains, preserves, and improves the functional integrity of the Highway Transportation System through Region-wide planning, administration, management, monitoring, and enforcement of Federal Guidelines, State Statutes, and State Rules and Regulations. The unit administers transportation construction and design contracts and oversees contractors and consultants performing the work. It also manages hydraulics, local agency project design, clearance coordination, advertisement, and construction.
Engineer-In-Training II is a first-working level engineer position that builds upon basic engineering theories, concepts, and principles to progress toward becoming a licensed professional engineer. Under the supervision of a Licensed Professional Engineer, this role applies and implements engineering theories, principles, and standards, with a focus on providing engineering knowledge and support to the Region Hydraulics Unit.
Responsibilities
- Provide hydraulic engineering support for all assigned CDOT, Local Agency, and Permits projects and submittals.
- Review drainage construction plans, specifications, and reports prepared by consultants, local entities, and private developers to ensure designs meet appropriate federal, state, and local engineering standards.
- Work with Project Managers in developing work scopes, person-hour estimates, consultant section input, and hydraulic deliverables for CDOT projects.
- Apply current engineering hydraulic principles, theories, design specifications, and standards to develop safe, efficient, and economical hydraulic designs.
- Perform analysis of roadway and bridge geometry, river modeling, structure opening recommendations, and floodplain mapping.
- Propose design alternatives or concepts and make recommendations based on engineering judgment.
- Prepare design drawings using ORD.
- Use various hydraulic-related software packages (HY-8, HEC-RAS, WMS, etc.).
- Perform field visits for project scoping, site inspection, and investigation related to drainage maintenance problems; identify the source and contributing factors of drainage-related issues, propose effective solutions, and prepare engineering guidance.
- Participate in various committees.
- Other job duties as assigned.
Schedule
- Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday-Friday, with flexibility to meet work/life balance needs.
- Hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work.
- Approximately 10% spent in the field, 90% spent in the office.
- Travel required during work hours; required to operate CDOT vehicles.
Requirements
- Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors.
- Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors will substitute for the Engineer Intern enrollment.
- Must pass a pre-employment screening, which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks.
- A current valid driver's license is required.
- Individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training must obtain registration as a Professional Engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors within eight years of the initial appointment.

- Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access), Google applications and Gmail, MS Project, MicroStation, ORD, familiarity with SAP, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
- Experience with the Watershed Modeling System (WMS), Surface Modeling System (SMS), HEC-RAS, SRH-2D, the FHWA Hydraulic Toolbox, HEC-HMS, HY-8, and other similar hydrologic/hydraulic software.
- Familiarity with the most recent versions of the suite of Hydraulic Engineering Circulars published by FHWA.
- Ability to produce major hydraulic structure design, including floodplain encroachment considerations, fish passage requirements, bank stabilization, foundation scour countermeasures, proposed bridge freeboard/vertical alignment, and stream/bank grading plan production.
