Role Summary

The Engineer II, Fire Protection role is responsible for supporting fire protection engineering standards, continuous improvement program, and general subject matter expertise in all fire protection systems throughout the company.

Responsibilities & Essential Functions Include

  • Operations Support
    • Provide response to field operations requests for technical assistance and guidance on application of fire protection systems in compliance with established codes and company standards.
    • Technical support to operations in the event of incidents.
    • Provide operations support for fire protection systems maintenance, testing, and upgrades to ensure compliance with API, NFPA, OSHA, and local regulations.
    • Participate in building productive relationships with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) across our asset portfolio in conjunction with local operations personnel.
    • Provide technical expertise for fire incident investigation and response strategies.
  • Program Management
    • Manage the fire protection maintenance program including the scope/budgets for all projects in the portfolio while leveraging vendor relationships to drive cost savings and operational efficiency.
    • Implement strategies to minimize accidental fire system discharges and reduce AFFF foam concentrates within the company.
    • Cooky review and coordination with teams to establish and maintain site-specific fire response plans, including water and foam resources.
    • Monitor inspection and testing reports from third-party vendors, providing guidance on corrective actions and system improvements.
    • Identify reliability opportunities, design improvements, and oversee implementation in coordination with Operations & Maintenance personnel.
    • Promote an atmosphere of safety excellence through leading by example and interceding when necessary to correct behaviors.
  • Design Review
    • Participate in the development of concepts to improve facility fire protection, considering applicable codes, safety standards, and environmental requirements.
    • Participate in design reviews and provide guidance to designers and external design contractors relating to project design packages.
  • Engineering Standards
    • Produce, monitor, and improve engineering standards, recommended practices, standard designs, and specifications that form part of the company's design library.

    Position Requirements

    • Bachelor's Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or related field required.
    • Working knowledge of NFPA (11, 13, 20, 24, 25, 30, 58, 72, etc.), API standards, and OSHA regulations applicable to pipeline and terminal facilities.
    • 7+ years’ experience as a working fire protection engineer in the refining/midstream business, chemicals industry, other process industry, or with an engineering firm serving these industries.
    • Up to 30%-40% travel – Primarily Domestic.

    Additional Skills

    • Possess and actively apply practical firefighting experience, particularly involving tanks containing ignitable liquids & gases, during project development/review from a first responder's perspective.
    • Experience in working with firefighting foam including foam systems.
    • Experience in testing and commissioning various fire protection systems.

    Essential Functions

    • This position requires the ability to safely and successfully perform essential job functions consistent with ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and or/quantitative productivity standards.
    • This role requires the ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state, and local standards.
    • This position requires compliance with all personnel policies.

    Physical & Safety Requirements

    • This role is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions.
    • This position requires the employee to regularly access and work at or around heights more than 5 feet, moving mechanical parts, moving on-track rail equipment, petroleum products or other chemical fumes, airborne particles like dust or other chemicals, vibration, uneven terrain, and high noise level in the work environment.
    • The person in this position needs to occasionally move inside the office to access file cabinets, office equipment, etc.
    • This role continuously operates a computer and other office productivity equipment (i.e. a calculator, copy machine and computer printer).
    • The incumbent in this role must wear Fire Retardant Clothing (FRC) and/or Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
    • The employee is frequently required to effectively communicate with others.
    • This position requires the ability to work comfortably and safely in the proximity to open water.
    • This position is subject to DOT drug and alcohol regulations.
