Job Summary & Responsibilities

The Employment Specialist assists refugees to obtain employment in their new community. Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting an initial assessment and creating an employment plan
  • Providing pre-employment coaching and support throughout the job search process
  • Aiding clients with all aspects of their job search, including resume creation, interview preparation, and application submission
  • Transporting clients to job sites and hiring fairs
  • Assessing client skills and matching them with appropriate job opportunities
  • Maintaining contact with employers to ensure job sustainability and employer satisfaction
  • Performing post-placement follow-up to ensure successful employment outcomes

Required Competencies

  • Career Competencies: Coordinate services, deliver services within diverse cultural communities, meet standards of practice, provide crisis intervention, communicate professionally, document efforts.
  • Foundational Competencies: Active listening, social perceptiveness, complex problem solving, critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing, service orientation, computer skills.

EXAMPLE ACTIVITIES

  • Completing employment orientation and employment plan in collaboration with refugee clients
  • Referring clients to appropriate training programs based on their interests, education, and career goals
  • Providing pre-employment skills training and job readiness coaching
  • Offering public transportation orientation and training
  • Referring clients to additional supports such as childcare and transportation assistance
  • Assessing client skills and completing job applications
  • Transporting clients to job sites and hiring fairs
  • Following up with employers after applications or interviews
  • Researching and identifying new industries and employers offering employment opportunities for refugees
  • Maintaining contact with employers through various methods
  • Ensuring ongoing eligibility and compliance for cash assistance and transportation assistance
  • Tracking payments and disbursements in client records
  • Conducting post-placement follow-up to assess employment outcomes and employer satisfaction

Transportation

Must maintain a valid driver's license and carry personal auto liability insurance at the level of $100,000/300,000/100,000. Frequent travel with personal vehicle. May be required to transport clients in personal vehicle.

Required Certifications

  • Associates degree or two years of college preferred
  • Candidates with a high school diploma and two years of transferable work/volunteer experience may be considered
  • Arabic, Spanish, or Swahili bilingual preferred
