EMOC Coordinator Trainee

This position is part of a structured apprenticeship program in the 24/7/365 EMOC Command Center, providing on-the-job training under the supervision of a full-time EMOC staff member (Coordinator, Technician, or Senior Manager). The program consists of 4,160 hours of training over two years, including off-hour classes at Local 95.

About the role

The EMOC Coordinator Trainee will assist with and eventually take responsibility for continuous monitoring of campus-wide Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Energy Management Systems (EMS), as well as coordinating support for infrastructure events or emergencies involving Facilities Management. Training includes:

  • Monitoring building MEP and utility functions through the centralized Building Automation System.
  • Reviewing and responding to system alarms by coordinating field support.
  • Responding to campus emergencies by contacting management and coordinating response activities.
  • Handling off-hour customer calls to Facilities Management and dispatching staff as needed.

The program follows a structured schedule of four six-month steps, with placement based on experience. Trainees serve a six-month probationary period. Upon successful completion, work shifts convert to rotating assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and apply all aspects of the EMOC Coordinator’s duties under supervision.
  • Assist with monitoring and troubleshooting BAS/EMS networks, systems, and devices.
  • Coordinate support for campus infrastructure events or emergencies.
  • Respond to system alarms and dispatch appropriate field personnel.
  • Manage off-hour customer calls and dispatch Facilities Management staff.
  • Perform duties as assigned by Facilities Management.

This position reports to the EMOC Building Automation/Energy Management Systems Manager and is part of a Collective Bargaining Agreement with IUOE Local 95.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED (required).
  • No prior experience required.
  • Ability to:
    • Be mobile across campus.
    • Lift up to 50 pounds.
    • Crawl into confined spaces (e.g., manholes, utility tunnels).
    • Maneuver in tight areas.
    • Climb ladders and work from heights.
    • Work alternate shifts, including rotating schedules post-training.

Schedule

During training: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (on-campus). Post-training: Rotating shifts as assigned.

Pay

Hiring range determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
