About the Role

The ED Tech/Clerk reports to the ED Nurse Manager but functions under the direct supervision of an ED Nurse and ED Physician on duty. This role collaborates productively with emergency department physicians, family practice staff, and administration at Telluride Regional Medical Center. The position's duties vary between tech and clerical responsibilities based on seasonal needs:

  • Off-season: approximately 85% ED Clerical and 15% ED Tech
  • Summer and winter season: duties may rotate between 95% ED Tech/5% ED Clerical and 85% ED Clerical/15% ED Tech, depending on ED needs and scheduling

Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Responds to emergency/critical care situations, following established procedures such as CPR with emphasis on airway maintenance and ventilation
  • Ensures high levels of patient satisfaction through respectful behavior, addressing patient rights, needs, culture, and confidentiality
  • Communicates concerns to supervisors and uses the chain of command to address issues
  • Assists with technical functions including:
    • Obtaining 12-lead EKGs
    • Performing venipuncture and discontinuing peripheral IVs and saline locks
    • Obtaining and properly labeling specimens for laboratory analysis
    • Performing point-of-care testing
  • Provides wound care, patient positioning, application of orthopedic splints and dressings
  • Transports patients to other departments
  • Measures and fits crutches, instructs patients on proper use
  • Prepares patients for examinations and treatments, offering encouragement, support, and comfort to patients and family members
  • Maintains clean and safe patient care areas by cleaning and stocking rooms and carts, checking equipment, disinfecting surfaces, removing waste, and changing linens
  • Maintains knowledge of appropriate medical equipment and supplies
  • Performs tasks within the scope of educational preparation and permitted by TRMC policies and local, state, and federal guidelines
  • Follows OSHA standards for universal precautions, biological hazards, infectious disease hazards, waste disposal, cleaning after contamination, and respiratory droplet protection

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Uses computer applications relevant to the position
  • Assists with answering phones
  • Ensures proper coding and timely entry of all charges
  • Assists with patient registration in e-Clinical Works and collection of demographic information
  • Documents patient chart information appropriately
  • Checks @tellmed email during each work shift

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Proof of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification required
  • IV certification required
  • Current CPR for Healthcare Workers or BCLS certification from the American Heart Association
  • One year of current experience within the last three years as an EMT or healthcare provider
  • Spanish medical interpretation is a plus

Skills

  • Effective communication in English, both verbal and written
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to set priorities
  • Proficient computer skills, including ability to learn eCW (eClinical Works) and T-Systems
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (e.g., face mask, goggles, gloves) as needed
  • Ability to make quick decisions, report patient conditions with minimal supervision, and work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to organize and complete work in a timely manner
  • Understanding of medical/surgical terminology
  • Strong customer service and effective listening skills

Work Environment

  • General office, medical clinic, and emergency department settings
  • Exposure to human biohazards requiring OSHA training
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods
  • Fast-paced, high-stress environment
  • Exposure to potentially dangerous materials/chemicals; requires following safety precautions and using protective equipment
  • Occasional lifting under 30 lbs; assisted lifting under 50 lbs
  • Bending, shifting, kneeling, and assisting with patient movement

Conditions of Employment

  • Certifications and licensures must be maintained
  • Hepatitis vaccination provided by TRMC; declination option available or proof of prior vaccination
  • Annual influenza vaccination required or must wear a mask during flu season (December-April)
  • Pre-employment background investigation required

Pay

Pay rate range starts at $23/hour. Actual rate will be commensurate with experience.
