About the role
Assists with basic patient care based on individual patient needs within the scope of practice under direct supervision of the registered nurse. Maintains environment that is prepared for patient care. Demonstrates competency in the following areas:
Responsibilities
- Takes, documents and reports vital signs.
- Reports abnormal results immediately to registered nurse.
- Takes height and weight measurements.
- Placed ECG electrodes and attaches ECG monitor correctly.
- Aids in setting up oxygen according to instructions.
- Aids registered nurse and physicians with assessments, examinations and treatments.
- Records I&O, collects specimens.
- Notifies appropriate licensed staff when patient complains of pain.
- Observes, documents and reports patient condition and changes in condition to the registered nurse.
- Aids in transporting patients, as necessary.
- Documents patient care performed, including vital signs, bedside care and observations.
- Adheres to hospital policy addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.
- Communicates in an effective and efficient manner with all documentation, with all co-workers, patients, visitors and physicians.
- Responds to patient and visitor questions and needs immediately and within established standards.
- Maintains patient comfort and privacy.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Supports and assists team members in all activities.
- Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-services meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for ongoing education.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
Requirements
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Preferred one (1) year experience in acute hospital setting or in ambulance.
- Current BLS Certification.
Professional Requirements
- Meets dress code standards for the department; appearance is neat and clean.
- Completes annual education requirements.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
- Maintains regulatory requirements.
- Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
- Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly.
- Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
- Attends annual review and department in-services as scheduled.
- Attends 12 staff meetings; or reads and returns all staff meeting minutes.
- Actively participates in the department’s continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
- Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility as well as the focus statement of the department.
