Emergency Medical Technician

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) plays a crucial role in driving an ambulance to emergency scenes, assessing patients, administering treatments, and transporting them to facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the ambulance safely in accordance with Indiana law and area mapping systems
  • Operate ambulance and hospital radio equipment according to hospital policies and procedures
  • Complete initial and ongoing patient assessments and take appropriate actions when significant changes are recognized
  • Gather and relay pertinent patient information to the Emergency Department via cellular telephone/radio system and written reports
  • Administer basic life support treatments, including non-visualized airways and IV maintenance, and treat patients based on age-specific issues
  • Assist paramedics with advanced life support care, adhering to standing orders and protocols
  • Clean and restock the ambulance and garage area as needed
  • Offer assistance to emergency physicians and nurses in the Emergency Department
  • Think independently to ensure daily job assignments are completed without direct supervision
  • Assist in orienting new EMTs, Paramedics, and students
  • Attend unit in-services and educational programs
  • Maintain current certification records on all required skill levels
  • Perform phlebotomy as per Community Howard Regional Health Policies and Procedures
  • Maintain the privacy and security of protected health information (PHI)

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 6-12 months experience with an ambulance service (Preferred)
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certifications/licenses
  • Current certification records on all required skill levels
  • Committed to teamwork, communication, and problem-solving
