Emergency Medical Technician/EMT (Full time) - Emergency Medical Services/EMS

Major Functions

The County of Volusia is seeking Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) candidates to provide basic life support, pre-hospital medical care, and transportation for the ill and injured throughout Volusia County. This position is posted on a continuous basis and may close without notice.

• Performs assessment and treatment consistent with the United States Department of Transportation National Standard Curriculum for Emergency Medical Technician – Basic pursuant to and in accordance with standing orders promulgated by the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Medical Director or his or her designee.
• Operates, maintains and troubleshoots equipment utilized for prehospital assessment and care.
• Safely operates vehicles in accordance with state law and prevailing standards.
• Acquires, manages, and protects privileged health information in accordance with federal and state laws, and county policies.
• Prepares and completes other reports and documents as necessary (e.g. controlled substance accountability logs, etc.).
• Testsifies in court (e.g. homicide trial, DUI, chain of custody), and gives depositions.
• Interacts with patients, coworkers, peers, other health care providers, and the public in a professional and considerate manner.
• Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
• Responds to all emergency situations as directed.
• Must adhere to all Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
• May be assigned to other locations based upon operational needs.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

• Graduation from high school or completion of a GED.
• Possession of a valid driver's license at time of appointment.
• Possession of a valid class E Florida driver's license within 30 days of appointment and maintain thereafter.
• Possession of a Florida Emergency Medical Technician - Basic certification.
• Possession of a certificate indicating completion of a sixteen (16) hour emergency vehicle operations course, or equivalent, which meets or exceeds the requirements of the State of Florida within 30 days of hire.
• Possession of a valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) credential (must include adult, child, and infant), as permitted by the Florida Department of Health.
• Approval by the Emergency Medical Services Medical Director to practice as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
• Possession and retention of the following Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) training courses prior to hire: IS-100.c – Introduction to the Incident Command System, ICS 100 IS-200.c – Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response IS-700.b – An Introduction to the National Incident Management System.

Employment Requirements

• Must possess and retain a valid driver's license at time of appointment.
• Must possess a valid class E Florida driver's license within 30 days of appointment and maintain thereafter.
• Must possess a valid Florida Emergency Medical Technician - Basic certification.
• Must possess a certificate indicating completion of a sixteen (16) hour emergency vehicle operations course, or equivalent, which meets or exceeds the requirements of the State of Florida within 30 days of hire.
• Must possess a valid cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) credential (must include adult, child, and infant), as permitted by the Florida Department of Health.
• Must provide proof of completion (certificates) for the following FEMA training courses prior to hire: IS-100.c – Introduction to the Incident Command System, ICS 100 IS-200.c – Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response IS-700.b – An Introduction to the National Incident Management System.
• Must pass a pre-employment background check.
• Must successfully complete the division's physical assessment prior to hire or promotion and if hired, continue to successfully complete the assessment on an annual basis.
• Must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
• Must not be excluded from participating as a health care provider in insurance programs including, but not limited to, Medicare and Medicaid prior to and during employment at the County of Volusia.
• All employees covered hereunder shall be non-tobacco users and nicotine free at the time of hire as a condition of employment and shall be required, as an absolute condition of continued employment, to refrain from smoking cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or use of any type of tobacco products of any kind at all times, whether on or off duty.
