Emergency General Surgeon

About the role

Rochester General Hospital is seeking a Board Eligible or Board Certified Emergency General Surgeon to join a high-functioning, collegial team. This position offers opportunities for academic involvement in a new General Surgery Residency program.

Responsibilities

• Deliver urgent surgical care to patients with acute conditions such as appendicitis, cholecystitis, pancreatitis, bowel obstruction, trauma, and more.
• Work closely with a multidisciplinary team including anesthesiologists, emergency physicians, APPs, and nurses to provide timely and coordinated care.
• Utilize both open and minimally invasive techniques across a broad range of complex surgical conditions.
• Participate in quality and safety initiatives aligned with Rochester Regional Health's system goals and shared values.
• Engage in education and mentorship of residents and medical students.
• Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to the academic growth of the department through teaching and collaboration.

Requirements

• Board Eligible or Board Certified in General Surgery
• Fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care, Acute Care Surgery, or Trauma is ideal but not required
• Minimum 3 years of independent Emergency General Surgery experience in a hospital setting
• NYS Medical License (or eligibility)
• Demonstrated expertise in managing complex surgical emergencies
• Passion for patient-centered, team-based care
• Strong communication skills and clinical judgment under pressure
• Commitment to education and professional growth

Qualifications

• MD or DO degree
• Education Department (NYSED) licenses/certifications
• Physician - New York State Education Department (NYSED)
• New York State Education Department (NYSED)
• Physical Requirements: L - Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly; requires occasional walking, standing or squatting.
