Essential Functions
- Provide basic and advanced life support treatment, care and evaluation of patients.
- Interviews patients, measures vital signs, and records information on patients' charts.
- Monitors, records and communicates patient condition and treatment, as appropriate.
- Initiates and implements interventions based on protocols.
- Assists with treatments and tests ordered by provider as supervised by provider or registered nurse as necessary.
- Performs select clinical duties after demonstration of clinical competency and in accordance with hospital and professional scope of practice.
- Identifies, intervenes, and stabilizes the ill or injured patient under the direction, and in collaboration with a physician and/or Registered Nurse.
- Provides population specific education to the patient and family about the patient's illness and therapeutic interventions.
- Collaborates with the nursing and provider teams to provide specific care such as protocol medication administration, patient reassessment, breathing treatments and suctioning support, peripheral IV placement, diagnosis and acuity specific discharge teaching.
- Attends staff meetings and in-services, and remains aware of communication that affects patient care, services, and department operations.
- Performs and / or assists with safe transfer of patients throughout the facility for tests or hospital admission.
Education
- High School graduate or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED) or High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED) required.
- Successful completion of a state approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), or Paramedic program or course, or graduate of Medical Assistant Program (Clinical Certified Medical Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or Registered Medical Assistant) required.
Experience
- 1+ years experience in Pediatrics, Emergency Department or Urgent Care preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Advanced EMT or Paramedic in the state of Wisconsin OR Medical Assistant Certification.
- Collaborative teamwork skills within an interdisciplinary group focused on patient care.
- Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment.
- Exhibits strong decision-making skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times according to policy and procedure and HIPAA requirements.
- Demonstrates compassion and patience with a deep level of concern for patients.
- Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
- Must be able to communicate effectively and in a positive manner with patients, family, public, and other health care workers.
- Must be able to cope with stressful situations, including death and dying and dealing with anguished relatives.
- Ability to perform while under stress.
- Ability to follow hospital policies, goals and procedures.
- Ability to recognize and effectively treat life-threatening conditions.
- During periods of high volume, additional shifts may be required.
Certifications/Licenses
- BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/National Safety Council.
