Responsibilities

Perform a variety of routine patient care tasks under the direction of nursing staff to assist medical and nursing personnel in the examination, treatment, and care of patients. Perform a variety of clerical tasks and other technical tasks as assigned.

• Participate in personal care interventions for patients of all ages, including meal tray preparation, feeding, recording intake and output, bathing, shaving, changing clothing, cleaning and trimming fingernails, bed-making, assisting with ambulation, enemas, skin care, and bowel and bladder elimination.
• Perform CPR.
• Function as a patient attendant for patients identified as high risk for harm to self or others and safety concerns.
• Prepare patients, equipment, and supplies for specific procedures and provide manual assistance as required.
• Collect, deliver, and conduct routine tests on patient specimens.
• Escort or transport patients that do not require hemodynamic monitoring.
• Clean assigned area; stock and replenish supplies and equipment as required.
• Maintain "readiness" of the HAZMAT Room and provide assistance during hazmat decontamination procedures.
• Perform a variety of EKG technician tasks, including routine and STAT EKGs, order verification, electronic transmission of EKGs, accommodation of special EKG requests, stocking and maintenance of EKG machines, and retrieval of old EKGs from the Heart Station.
• Perform Health Unit Coordinator (EDUC) tasks such as operating and troubleshooting office equipment, maintaining organization of the assigned desk, managing lab specimens and orders, answering telephones, and/or patient call bells.
• Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Requirements

• Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher and wheelchair patients to various hospital locations.
• Ability to provide care and services to all patients from birth to the elderly.
• Excellent prioritization skills and basic knowledge of patient care.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, unpredictable environment under stressful conditions.
• Ability to be trained in all aspects of hazmat decontamination procedures.
• Goal-directed with a great deal of initiative, functioning independently within the Emergency Department.
• Demonstrate competency validation in skills and knowledge for performance of roles and responsibilities.

Qualifications

Education: Work requires graduation from an accredited high school or a GED. Successful completion of the NCA I training as defined by the Division of Facility Services in the State of North Carolina or North Carolina EMT training. Requires the ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Experience: Related experience preferred but not required.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications:

• Current minimum listing as an NCA I with the Division of Facility Services or current minimum credential as EMT with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect, or misappropriation of property.
• BLS certification required.
