About the role

Engineering work related to developing procurement and application specifications for design, construction, installation, and operation of the electrical distribution utility system.

Responsibilities

  • Performs professional engineering work in the design and application of electric utility distribution equipment and installation practices.
  • Sets up and administers contracts with outside agencies to perform various construction activities and install equipment per Utilities Light and Power construction standards.
  • Conducts studies and develops information as needed to determine system design and customer loading guidelines.
  • Conducts electric system protection coordination studies and prepares work orders for application of protective devices.
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders to develop and maintain electric design and service standards while promoting safe and efficient system operations through technical guidance and training for designers, lineworkers, and operations personnel.
  • Provides technical services and consultation to other engineers and staff to guide budgets and capital improvement projects.
  • Supervises or coordinates the work of Level I and II Electrical Engineers, drafters, or technicians.
  • Performs research, studies, and utilizes industry knowledge and connections to evaluate materials, equipment, and procedures for safety, reliability and effectiveness.
  • Prepares and revises specifications and standard drawings for electric material and equipment, designating parts and materials acceptable for specific uses.
  • Analyzes quotations, proposals, and bids for total owning cost and conformance to specifications.
  • Seeks input and gains consensus or acceptance with user personnel in development of new guidelines, standards, or procedures and communicates them to all affected parties.
  • Participates on national and international industry working groups or standards making bodies as a means of gaining a broader understanding of design impacts to manufacturers and other users.
  • Prepares work orders and construction plans for major field installation projects and special design projects requiring professional engineering expertise.
  • Researches electric load growth patterns, establishes load projection guidelines for new development, and reviews contingency plans to restore service under emergency conditions.
  • Develops application and field installation standards and guidelines for the installation of fiber optic communications.
  • Designs substation equipment additions and upgrades.
  • Provides project management functions such as vendor and contractor coordination, reporting, scheduling, inspection, testing, and final commissioning.
  • Prepares stock item descriptions consistent with materials specifications and evaluates vendors.

Qualifications

College degree or equivalent work experience. Some positions may require functionally related certification or advanced degrees. Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university. Eight years of progressively responsible engineering experience in an electric utility.

Skills

Intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices applicable to electric utility materials, design, application, construction, and operation. Knowledge of economics, statistics, and advanced math. Ability to apply advanced mathematical and physics related concepts in order to solve moderately difficult to complex engineering problems. Ability to perform basic statistical analysis. Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate at executive level and influence effectively. Uses strategic critical thinking, and analytical thought process to solve problems, resolve issues, and develop solutions to problems. Ability to prepare, review, analyze and assist with the preparation of bid specifications. Ability to apply engineering skills to assist with electric system long-range studies and planning. Skilled in the use of GIS, engineering, computer-aided drafting, web content/photo editing, spreadsheet, database, and word processing software. Excellent customer service and co-worker relations skills.

Pay

$87,211.00 - 145,350.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly). Annual anticipated hiring range: $104,000.00 - 129,000.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly).

Schedule

Full-Time Regular. FLSA Status: Exempt.
