About the Role

Steam Plant Systems Engineering is seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Electrical Systems Engineer to join its management team. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a high energy level, a commitment to excellence, and alignment with Con Edison’s corporate values and mission. This role requires a self-starter capable of exercising independent judgment and making sound business decisions while managing multiple assignments and deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Perform System Condition Assessments to identify and document system or component deficiencies, review equipment operation, and generate and drive corrective actions.
  • Establish and maintain effective lines of communication among various internal and external organizations.
  • Review and maintain System Descriptions, P&IDs, and other design basis documentation.
  • Perform root cause analysis of component failures and forced outages.
  • Provide engineering support to Steam Generating Stations.
  • Participate in project planning, outages, and construction processes.
  • Generate or review acceptance test plans and oversee or observe testing/commissioning.
  • Interface with and track activities of equipment and service providers, both inside and outside the Company.
  • Generate detailed reports and presentations to inform and guide Central Engineering capital planning and all levels of management.
  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as needed.

Requirements

Candidates must possess a thorough understanding of plant electrical system design, construction, operations, maintenance, testing, or analysis within the utility or marine propulsion industries. Required experience includes:

  • Transformers (up to 120,000kVA)
  • Switchgear, breakers, and power cables (up to 69kV)
  • Generators (up to 230,000kVA)
  • Motors, MCCs, power panels, and buss-work
  • Electric transmission systems

Working knowledge of the following is required:

  • Equipment sizing, analysis, and lifecycle management
  • Protection schemes, UPS systems, and dielectric fluids
  • State and federal regulations, industry standards, and process safety practices

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering and five (5) years of engineering work experience focused on the design, analysis, and modification of industrial systems, or
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering and four (4) years of engineering work experience focused on the design, analysis, and modification of industrial systems.

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and five (5) years of engineering work experience focused on the design, analysis, and modification of industrial systems.

Relevant Work Experience

  • Demonstrated personal accountability with the ability to manage multiple assignments and adjust priorities as needed.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team-based environment.
  • Understanding of leadership, commitment to excellence, and delivery of high-quality customer service.
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to work effectively in both office and field environments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience working in electric and/or steam power plants or substations (preferred).
  • Experience performing or directing electrical testing of plant equipment, including transformers, generators, breakers, and related systems (preferred).

Licenses and Certifications

  • Driver’s License (Required)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) (Preferred)
  • Master Electrician License (Preferred)

Additional Physical Demands

  • Assigned a System Emergency Assignment (emergency response role) requiring availability during non-business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to travel to company locations and wear required PPE as needed.
