Electrical Engineer
About the role
We are seeking a Contract Electrical Engineer to support a critical development program with a leader in advanced electronic solutions for defense and specialized applications. This role will focus on the design and delivery of a custom voice control panel, supporting an active, high-visibility project with defined timelines. This position serves as a hands-on technical consultant responsible for bridging hardware and embedded firmware development, while also enabling efficient validation through custom-built test systems. The ideal candidate is an independent, execution-focused engineer who can integrate quickly into an existing team and drive deliverables with minimal oversight.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop printed circuit boards (PCBs) for a custom voice-enabled control system.
- Create schematics, layout, and component selection aligned with performance, cost, and manufacturability goals.
- Support prototype builds, debugging, and iterative design improvements.
- Ensure compliance with relevant electrical and system-level requirements.
- Analyze and update legacy 8-bit microcontroller firmware to support new system functionality.
- Optimize embedded code for performance, reliability, and compatibility with updated hardware.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineers to integrate firmware with hardware interfaces and subsystems.
- Design and develop custom PLC-based test equipment to support product validation and production readiness.
- Establish test protocols and automate key validation processes where applicable.
- Troubleshoot hardware/firmware issues using structured root-cause analysis.
- Support the integration of the voice control panel within the broader system architecture.
- Work closely with internal engineering teams and stakeholders to ensure alignment with program objectives.
- Provide technical documentation, design updates, and regular status communication.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or related field.
- 5+ years of experience in electronics design and embedded systems development.
- Proven experience with PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, Eagle, or similar).
- Proficiency in Embedded C programming, particularly with 8-bit microcontrollers.
- Skill in hardware debugging using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
- Experience designing or supporting custom test equipment, ideally involving PLC systems.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, project-driven environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in Electrical Engineering.
- Experience with audio processing, voice control systems, or human-machine interfaces (HMI).
- Familiarity with defense or ruggedized electronic systems.
- Experience updating or modernizing legacy embedded systems.
- Knowledge of design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for testability (DFT).
- Exposure to system integration in regulated or high-reliability environments.
Work Environment
This position is onsite, providing direct access to specialized equipment and resources necessary for successful project delivery. This is a Contract position based out of Fort Wayne, IN.
Pay
The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $60.00/hr.
