About the role
Horton Pedestrian Access Solutions, a division of Overhead Door Corporation, serves a broad range of specialty door and access applications under the brands Horton Automatics, Won-Door, and Door Services Corporation. As an Electrical Engineer, you will work closely with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and maintain high-quality electronic solutions for automated entrance doors and related systems. This position is not eligible for employer-sponsored work authorization.
Responsibilities
- Design printed circuit boards (PCBs) from schematic to outsource packages for vendor evaluation of electronic control systems, utilizing microcontrollers in collaboration with Software engineers for operation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of automated entrance doors.
- Design motor drive circuits primarily for brush-type DC motors.
- Incorporate data communication capabilities into hardware designs, enabling door controls to communicate via Modbus, Canbus, or TCP/IP protocols with external systems.
- Design peripheral boards or independent products that integrate with control systems.
- Work with vendors to ensure controls meet specifications, reduce costs, resolve issues, and improve reliability.
- Coordinate activities with engineering and marketing teams to ensure projects progress on schedule and within budget; review status reports and adjust plans as needed.
- Establish and maintain contacts with internal and external customers to provide information, gain project acceptance, and ensure customer needs are met.
- Prototype design concepts and test controls or peripheral products to validate designs.
- Assist Technical Support in troubleshooting field difficulties.
- Help vendors identify alternate electronic parts for cost reduction or during availability issues.
- Advise engineering and marketing teams on potential product improvements.
- Report project status to senior management clearly and concisely.
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience managing large, highly visible projects with multiple vendors in engineering and technology.
- Design experience with system-level electronic PCB assemblies, preferably including motor controls.
- Strong component-level troubleshooting ability.
- Leadership experience on electrical design projects.
- Product design background encompassing embedded microcontrollers.
- Knowledgeable in C/C++ firmware development.
Preferred Qualifications
- PMI certification.
- Business development and product management background, including experience developing product plans and strategy.
- Experience gathering Voice of the Customer input and developing Customer Fitness for Use Criteria.
- Ability to collect and analyze feedback from customers, stakeholders, and teams to shape requirements, features, and end products.
- Experience developing product requirements, multi-year roadmaps, specifications, production timetables, pricing, and time-integrated plans for product introduction through launch and commercialization.
- Ensuring products and releases are launched correctly and on schedule.
Education
BS/MS in Electrical Engineering.
Travel
Occasional travel (up to 10%) may be required for project activity and field product support, including international travel to the Horton manufacturing plant in Mexico.
