About the role

The Elko County Clerk’s Office seeks enthusiastic high school students to serve as Poll Workers during elections. This role offers hands-on experience in local election processes, including voter processing and closing the polls.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside experienced and new poll workers to gain a comprehensive understanding of the electoral process.
  • Receive training on opening and closing polling places, processing voters, and handling election procedures.
  • Encourage participation in the democratic process among peers by inspiring them to vote once they turn 18.
  • Prepare for a long day, arriving at the polling place at 5:30 a.m. and potentially working until 9 p.m.
  • Be responsible for providing your own transportation to and from the polling place.

Requirements

  • At least 16 years old
  • A U.S. Citizen
  • A resident of the county where they wish to work

Qualifications

  • Must provide written permission from a parent or legal guardian.
  • Attend a 2 to 3-hour in-person training class and assist with setup on "Election Eve."
  • Complete required online training.

Benefits

  • Stipend checks mailed 2 to 3 weeks after the election.
  • Paid according to the following rates:
    • Election Training: $45 per attendance
    • Polling Place Setup: $25.00
    • Election Worker: $150.00 per day for a full day, $75.00 per day for half-day
    • Team Leader: $180.00 per day (full day)
    • Counting and Duplicating Boards and Additional Workers: $14.00 per hour

Schedule

Students are expected to be available on Election Day, typically starting at 5:30 a.m. and ending around 9 p.m., depending on the duration of the shift.

Pay

  • Election Training: $45 per attendance
  • Polling Place Setup: $25.00
  • Election Worker: $150.00 per day for a full day, $75.00 per day for half-day
  • Team Leader: $180.00 per day (full day)
  • Counting and Duplicating Boards and Additional Workers: $14.00 per hour
