About the role

We're looking for a hands-on Site Construction Safety Supervisor to be the boots-on-the-ground safety champion at our BESS and PV construction sites. You'll take ownership of EHS programs where it matters most—in the field, every day—enforcing compliance, mitigating the unique hazards of battery storage and solar installations, and building a safety culture that sticks. Working closely with the Site Construction Safety Manager, you'll be a driving force behind continuous improvement and a visible presence keeping crews safe on some of the most cutting-edge renewable energy projects in the industry.

Responsibilities

  • EHS Program Implementation & Enforcement:
    • Directly implement and rigorously enforce site-specific EHS plans, procedures, and programs.
    • Ensure all work activities strictly comply with OSHA (29 CFR 1910, 1926), NFPA 70E, local codes, and client requirements.
    • Ensure strict adherence to permit-to-work systems for high-risk activities (e.g., hot work, confined space entry, excavation, high-voltage electrical work).
  • On-Site Hazard Management & Risk Mitigation:
    • Conduct frequent, thorough, and documented daily site inspections, walk-throughs, and audits to proactively identify potential hazards, unsafe conditions, and at-risk behaviors among all personnel, including subcontractors.
    • Actively participate in and lead Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Pre-Task Planning (PTP) meetings, and daily toolbox talks, ensuring effective control measures are clearly understood and consistently applied.
    • Proactively address and mitigate complex hazards specific to BESS and PV projects, including:
      • Battery thermal runaway prevention and response.
      • Arc flash and electrical shock hazards (AC/DC).
      • Safe handling, lifting, and installation of battery modules and PV panels.
      • Working at heights on solar arrays and racking systems.
      • Excavation safety (trenching, shoring, utility locates).
      • Safe operation of heavy lifting equipment and mobile machinery.
  • Safety Training & Awareness:
    • Deliver engaging site-specific EHS orientations and daily toolbox talks to all new personnel and existing crews.
    • Assist the Site Construction Safety Manager in delivering specialized hazard training (e.g., LOTO, arc flash, fall protection, confined space, battery safety, emergency response).
    • Champion and promote a positive safety culture by consistently reinforcing safe behaviors, encouraging proactive hazard reporting, and fostering peer-to-peer safety observations.
  • Incident First Response & Reporting:
    • Act as a primary first responder to incidents, accidents, and near misses, ensuring immediate safety measures are taken and emergency services are contacted if necessary.
    • Assist the Site Construction Safety Manager in preliminary incident investigations, meticulously gathering information, conducting interviews, and accurately documenting findings.
    • Ensure timely and accurate initial reporting of all incidents to the Site Construction Safety Manager and relevant project leadership.
  • Compliance & Documentation Support:
    • Assist in maintaining comprehensive EHS documentation, including daily inspection logs, training records, incident reports, and safety meeting minutes.
    • Support the Site Construction Safety Manager in preparing and submitting required EHS reports to corporate EHS and clients.
    • Verify that all personnel have and consistently use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for their assigned tasks.
  • Subcontractor Safety Oversight:
    • Continuously monitor and evaluate subcontractor EHS performance on-site, ensuring their work activities align with company standards, project requirements, and regulatory compliance.
    • Communicate EHS expectations clearly to all subcontractor personnel and promptly address any observed deviations or non-compliance.
  • Emergency Preparedness & Response:
    • Ensure all personnel are thoroughly aware of and trained on site-specific emergency response plans (e.g., fire, medical, hazardous spills, severe weather).
    • Verify that all emergency equipment (e.g., fire extinguishers, spill kits, first aid supplies, AEDs) is readily available, properly maintained, and personnel are trained in its correct use.
  • Communication & Leadership:
    • Serve as a direct, approachable, and knowledgeable safety resource for all personnel on site, providing clear guidance and answering EHS-related questions.
    • Foster open communication channels, actively encouraging workers to report concerns, utilize stop-work authority when necessary, and suggest safety improvements.
    • Lead by example, consistently demonstrating an unwavering personal commitment to safety in all actions, decisions, and interactions, inspiring others to prioritize safety above all else.

Working Conditions

  • This role primarily operates on active construction sites, involving exposure to varying environmental conditions (e.g., extreme heat/cold, rain), significant noise levels, dust, uneven terrain, and potential exposure to energized electrical systems and hazardous materials.
  • Requires physical ability to frequently walk, stand for extended periods, climb ladders/scaffolding, stoop, kneel, bend, and lift/carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Frequent travel to various project sites across different geographies is a fundamental requirement of this role.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • An associate's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field is highly preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in construction safety supervision.
  • At least 1-2 years of direct, hands-on experience specifically on utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and/or Photovoltaic (PV) solar projects.

Qualifications

  • Certifications (Required & Preferred):
    • Required: OSHA 30-Hour Construction Outreach.
    • Required: Current First Aid/CPR/AED.
    • Required: NFPA 70E training (Arc Flash Safety) with demonstrated practical application.
    • Preferred: Competent Person certifications (e.g., Excavation, Fall Protection, Scaffolding), Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) awareness training.
  • Solid understanding and practical application of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 (Construction) standards.
  • Working knowledge of electrical safety principles, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), grounding, arc flash, and NFPA 70E requirements.
  • Familiarity with various battery energy storage technologies and their associated hazards (e.g., thermal runaway, off-gassing, electrolyte exposure).
  • Understanding of fall protection systems, excavation safety (soil classification, protective systems), confined space entry procedures, and heavy equipment safety protocols.
  • Basic knowledge of environmental regulations related to waste management and storm water.

Skills

  • Exceptional verbal communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear instructions, conduct effective toolbox talks, and engage diverse workforces.
  • Strong observational skills to identify hazards and at-risk behaviors.
  • Ability to implement immediate corrective actions and provide constructive feedback.
  • Good organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail for maintaining accurate records.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively in a dynamic construction environment.
  • Proven ability to enforce safety policies and procedures consistently, firmly, and fairly.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build rapport and influence safe practices among site personnel.
