Educator Fellow

About the Role

The Educator Fellows Program aims to create a temporary workforce of Educator Fellows who support teachers by providing engaging high-dosage tutoring and small-group instruction that celebrates student cultural wealth. This initiative offers an experiential entry into the education profession with funding and clear pathways for advancement. The fellowship is ideal for individuals who enjoy working with youth, have strong communication skills, and thrive in diverse environments with varying social needs. It provides hands-on experience in education and a solid foundation for those pursuing a career in the field.

Adaptability is key—successful candidates should be able to think on their feet, work with moderate ambiguity, and contribute creatively to problem-solving.

Responsibilities

• Provide instructional support services under the direct supervision of a highly qualified teacher.
• Assist a Mentor Teacher with program content and maintain open communication with both the Mentor Teacher and Program Director.
• Consult and assist with the Mentor Teacher on a continuous basis regarding program content and student progress.
• Plan and deliver individualized, targeted instruction in reading and math, either in small groups or one-on-one, in collaboration with the Mentor Teacher.
• Track student progress, monitor interventions, and consult with the Mentor Teacher on planning.
• Maintain current and accurate records as required.
• Complete micro-courses and professional development on topics such as classroom management, math and reading intervention, high-intensity tutoring strategies, and culturally and linguistically responsive teaching.
• Develop strong relationships with students and colleagues.
• Participate in regular coaching and feedback sessions.
• Follow district and school procedures.
• Accept additional responsibilities as assigned by the principal.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED.
• AA degree, 45 college hours (including necessary educational courses), or passing the Para Educator exam.
• Possess a Level III New Mexico Educational Assistant license and a Substitute license (or other qualifications as deemed appropriate by the Board).
• Enroll in a minimum of six (6) credit hours no later than the semester following hire, maintain good academic standing, and pursue coursework leading to an education-related degree and New Mexico educator licensure.
• Remain on track to graduate within six (6) calendar years (maximum program participation period).
• Pursue a degree that prepares you for state-level education licensure.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform job duties and access the work environment.
• May require sitting, standing, lifting, moving about the room or school, carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, kneeling, prolonged typing, and moving light furniture.

Equipment & Technology

Must know how to operate or be willing to learn all multimedia equipment, including current technology.

Work Environment

• Work within varying levels of noise, temperature, and air quality.
• Handle routine interruptions with flexibility and patience.
• Be self-motivated and able to complete assignments without direct supervision.
• After-hours work may be required.
