Responsibilities
- Arrive on time and be inside the classroom no later than 15 minutes before students arrive.
- Assist the teacher in maintaining order and discipline in the classroom.
- Communicate all relevant concerns about students to the teacher and direct care staff.
- Interact with children in ways appropriate to child growth and development.
- Help assess and evaluate each student’s progress daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly.
- Assist the teacher with preparation, instruction, and clean-up of materials and activities daily.
- Serve as substitute teacher as needed.
- Perform extensive data entry of student information to include assessment results and grades.
- Preparation and execution of effective lesson plans.
- Administer a variety of assessments to assist in identifying progress.
- Document and record scores and other relevant data.
- Maintain classroom presentation to promote both an aesthetically pleasing and safe environment.
- Assist ESL Facilitators in the instruction of basic subjects.
- Assist the ESL Facilitators in maintaining order and discipline in the classroom.
- Communicate all relevant concerns about students to the Lead ESL Facilitator.
- Ensure accuracy in record keeping and data entry.
- Be supportive of Compass Connections Educational Services Department on campus and in the community, and be loyal and complimentary of administration, staff, and fellow colleagues.
- Attend all planned Educational Services functions (e.g., open houses, in-services, and teacher workdays required for other teaching staff).
- Answer and make telephone calls, file, send faxes, make copies, and perform other clerical duties as needed.
- Serve as tutor to students between the ages of 5 to 17 years, working on a broad array of tasks at various grade levels.
- Answer questions about classroom assignments and provide individual instruction and guidance.
- Carry out supervisory teacher duties in a prompt and reasonable manner, when necessary, as agreed on with the teacher.
- Handle all student information with utmost confidentiality.
- Support, encourage, and recruit foster parents as part of Foster Care Programs.
- Other job duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Pass a pre-employment drug screen and random drug screens throughout employment.
- Must be at least 21 years of age or older at the time of application.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and have a good driving record.
- Working knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation, and arithmetic.
- Provide proof of work eligibility status upon request.
- Pass a pre-employment and biennial criminal background check.
- Demonstrate the ability to:
- Respond sensitively and competently to the service population’s cultural and socio-economic characteristics.
- Work collaboratively with other staff members, service providers, and professionals.
- Provide crisis intervention according to training provided by Compass Connections when needed to maintain a safe environment.
- Work in a fast-paced environment and maintain emotional control and professional composure at all times.
- Maintain computer literacy required to meet the responsibilities of the position.
- Work effectively and without intensive supervision both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of all Compass Connections policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Required: GED or high school diploma as required by state regulations.
- Preferred: Some college coursework in teaching Science, Social Studies, Math, Reading, Writing, and English as a Second Language at all levels of education, and/or social work.
- Certifications: First aid, CPR, Emergency behavior intervention.
- Three (3) years of experience in a classroom, community service, and/or an education setting.
