Patient Care Activities

  • Perform vital signs
  • Conduct 12-lead EKGs
  • Collect specimens
  • Administer point-of-care testing (glucometer)
  • Support activities of daily living (dressing, bathing, grooming, hygiene, toileting, feeding, and mobility)
  • Apply and remove splints, crutches, backboards, cervical collars, and KEDs
  • Provide simple wound care and dressings
  • Set up and assist with medical exams and procedures
  • Monitor physical restraints
  • Transport patients within and outside the department
  • Place bedside monitoring onto and off patients
  • Answer call lights at desk or bedside
  • Participate in stocking activities
  • Clean patient rooms and related care areas

Indirect Patient Care Activities

  • Facilitate communication and task completion throughout the Emergency Department
  • Assist with problem-solving, multi-tasking, and providing direction in a respectful manner
  • Work independently, meet commitments and deadlines, accept accountability for actions, keep information organized and accessible, manage time well, maintain a clean and functional work area, handle change, stay focused, and perform well under pressure

Communication and Behavior

  • Communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and staff in a manner that reduces barriers, overcomes conflicts through use of de-escalation techniques, and shares pertinent patient information such as status changes among healthcare team members
  • Professionally greet patients and visitors and coordinate their flow to the appropriate waiting areas or ensure they are directed to the correct staff persons

Education and Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • One year experience in direct patient caregiving roles preferred
  • Certification as PCA/CNA preferred
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support required
  • Mandt training course completed within 90 days of hire or as certification classes allow

Working Conditions

  • Intermittent predictable risk of exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons
  • Frequent exposure to infectious or communicable disease via blood and other body fluids
  • Occasional exposure to radiation
  • Intermittent predictable risk of exposure to anti-neoplastic agents
  • Frequent exposure to sharps and other potentially bio-hazardous materials
