About the role

The Non-Licensed Emergency Department Technician performs patient care activities as delegated by the Nurse and/or Physician for patients of all age groups with both acute and chronic health problems. Duties include phlebotomy, 12-lead ECG tracings, and providing direct patient care that encompasses the nursing assistant role.

Responsibilities

  • PARTICIPATION: in cost containment development/maintenance of positive work environment, minimizing overtime, attending required classes and meetings, participating in unit committees, adhering to all policies and procedures
  • PROMOTING PATIENT SAFETY: applying protective devices correctly, anticipating patient requests, making rounds every hour as a minimum, assisting RN in planning patient care, maintaining a safe unit environment
  • PROMOTING INFECTION CONTROL: washing hands before and after patient contact, handling soiled linen, equipment, and instruments per protocol, maintaining sterile asepsis, changing and securing dressings, maintaining isolation technique
  • PROMOTING PERSONAL SAFETY: utilizing PPE appropriately, keeping hallways clear of furniture/equipment, everything on one side
  • PROVIDES DAILY INVENTORY MAINTENANCE: maintaining support areas (kitchen, nurses’ station, utility rooms) clean/stocked, restocking equipment in patient rooms, accountable for wheelchairs, thermometers and other pertinent equipment, completing appropriate work forms for maintenance and clinical engineering service, equipment work orders, including removing from service
  • PROVIDES CARE AS DIRECTED: performing pulse oximetry, Foley catheter, straight cath insertion/placement, minicath – excludes children and infants, performing and documenting selected diagnostic tests – phlebotomy & 12-lead ECG recording, performing lab testing as appropriate, providing care for the patient requiring restraint or seclusion, performing splint application (Methodist only)
  • PROVIDES OBSERVATION AND MEASUREMENT OF PATIENT INFORMATION PER POLICY: temperatures - oral, rectal (axillary only under the direction of RN), pulse - apical and radial, blood pressure, height and weight, intake and output, pain ratings
  • PERFORMS SPECIAL PROCEDURES: application of heat/cold, decubitus care, pelvic exam setup, I & D setups, surgical skin prep, apply ace/TEDS/binders, apply/remove leads, assist coughing & deep breathing, assist with physical exam, maintain and clean suction equipment, application of hypo/hyperthermia unit, care of oxygen equipment, room set-up for traumas, suture set-up, moderate sedation set-up, patient prep for any procedure
  • DEMONSTRATES SKILLS TO PROMOTE PATIENT AND STAFF SAFETY THROUGH APPROPRIATE USE OF LIFT EQUIPMENT
  • PROVIDES DIRECT PATIENT CARE THAT SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTS PATIENT SATISFACTION: maintaining a pleasant environment for patients by keeping rooms visually clean and uncluttered, ready to monitor patient post-procedure, participating in admission, transport and discharge of patients, assisting patients with -in-bed mobility; transfers to/from bed, WC, stretcher, or chair; positioning for alignment and comfort, assisting patients with nutrition management: preparing patients for meals by offering washing of hands, mouth care and positioning in chair or bed before meal tray arrives, delivering trays, documenting intake per policy, feeding dependent patients as needed, providing fresh water, ice and snacks, providing assistance with elimination procedures: offering/removing bedpans and urinals, providing catheter care per policy, removing Foley catheters, applying external urinary catheters, emptying urinary drainage bags using goggles and gloves, collecting specimens for ordered tests, catheterizing female and male patients, communicating any intake and output

Qualifications

  • Certifications: Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Training within 3 months, Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days
  • Education: H.S. Diploma/GED
  • Work Experience: Acute care

Skills

  • Knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing
  • Thorough understanding and working knowledge of all equipment necessary to perform job functions
  • Practical problem-solving approach to patient moving and handling issues
  • Appropriate use of lift equipment

Pay

The compensation range for this position is $17.89 per hour - $28.98 per hour.
