In this public-facing role, you will connect local businesses, residents, property owners, and community partners with programs that support business growth, housing, and neighborhood investment. Your primary economic development focus will be Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ) business engagement—visiting businesses, explaining program benefits, supporting enrollment and retention, and helping participants access available resources. You will also coordinate Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and affordable housing activities.

Responsibilities

  • Visit and contact businesses to promote UEZ participation, explain benefits, and assist with enrollment, renewals, and documentation.
  • Serve as a public contact for UEZ, CDBG, and affordable housing inquiries; provide information, assist with forms, and connect applicants with appropriate resources.
  • Build and maintain relationships with business owners, residents, property owners, nonprofits, developers, consultants, government representatives, and City staff.
  • Coordinate communications, document collection, project follow-up, reporting support, and routine compliance activities for assigned CDBG and affordable housing matters.
  • Maintain accurate files, databases, outreach records, applications, project records, deadlines, expenditures, and required submissions.
  • Prepare routine correspondence, reports, spreadsheets, presentations, and meeting materials; attend meetings, public events, business functions, and site visits as required.
  • Support related Public Affairs, business-assistance, grant-funded, and community revitalization activities, and perform other duties consistent with the Civil Service title.

Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal, customer service, written communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to explain information clearly, encourage participation, follow up consistently, and work professionally with a diverse public.
  • Strong organization, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple programs, deadlines, records, and requests.
  • The ability to learn program guidelines, reporting procedures, and basic compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, databases, electronic records, and presentations.
  • The ability to conduct local field visits and attend public or community events.
  • Applicants must possess and maintain a valid New Jersey Driver’s License.

Qualifications

To qualify for this title, applicants must meet one of the following pathways:

  • Experience: Six years of professional experience in industrial/commercial real estate sales, economic development, business development, or business assistance.
  • Bachelor’s Degree: A bachelor’s degree and two years of qualifying professional experience in one of the fields listed above.
  • Master’s Degree: A master’s degree in Economics, Public Administration, Business Administration, or a related field and one year of qualifying professional experience in one of the fields listed above.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in public contact, customer service, business outreach, sales, account management, business assistance, program coordination, administrative support, recordkeeping, or community engagement.
  • Familiarity with UEZ, CDBG, affordable housing, grants, or municipal programs is a plus—not a requirement.

Benefits

  • Medical, prescription, dental, and vision coverage
  • Paid vacation, sick, and administrative leave
  • Paid holidays
  • Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS)
  • Life insurance and disability benefits
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
