Job Focus

This position is responsible for assisting the teacher in an education setting.

Responsibilities

  • Aid the teacher in providing appropriate early childhood education experience
  • Show knowledge of using space, furnishings, and developmentally appropriate activities/materials
  • Employ appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to encourage children to engage in meaningful conversation
  • Create an environment that engages and assists children in developing curiosity, exploration, respect of self and others, problem-solving, security, and self-esteem while avoiding verbal or physical punishment
  • Participate in planning and preparing the learning environment, materials, and supplies
  • Individualize activities and make adaptations for children with special needs
  • Adhere to regulations regarding health, safety, and sanitation across multiple settings
  • Maintain confidentiality, professional attitude, and loyalty to the program at all times
  • Collect information about each child’s development
  • Participate as a team member in planning, coordination, and implementing the program
  • Act as an “ambassador” of the center by showing a warm, welcoming attitude toward families and their involvement in the life of the program
  • Engage in professional development as required to improve performance and expand personal knowledge of child development, interdisciplinary practice, and family-centered services
  • Develop and implement a written individual growth plan
  • Assist with general housekeeping tasks, and keep classrooms in a clean state including mopping, trash, etc.
  • Understand and comply with city and state regulations and licensing standards
  • Provide other services as required for the efficient functioning of The Salvation Army

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; some college preferred
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Meet requirements of city and state licensing agencies (Background checks, CPR, First aid, & TB skin test)
  • Previous experience working with children
  • Creative, enthusiastic, highly organized, flexible, good communication skills
  • Clean and neat appearance
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Experience in childcare for at least two years (preferred)
