About the role
The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) is seeking an experienced Boiler Operator (Stationary Engineer 2) on an on-call basis at the Buckley station in Pierce County, Washington.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the safe and efficient operation of a high-pressure steam plant with two steam-generating boilers
- Maintain continuous operation of the steam-boiler system by monitoring, inspecting, and repairing gauges, valves, pumps, boilers, electronic controls, and safety equipment
- Operate and maintain auxiliary systems, including feed-water and condensate pumps, deaerators, air compressors, fuel systems, and emergency generators
- Troubleshoot and perform both minor and major repairs on boiler and HVAC systems
- Interpret schematics, drawings, and operating manuals to support proper operation and equipment upgrades
- Operate and adjust Cleaver-Brooks Boiler Management (HAWK) systems as needed
- Conduct equipment testing, water treatment, and blow-down procedures to ensure safe and compliant operations
Requirements
- Three years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of stationary or marine high-pressure boilers and heating systems
- Completion of an advanced Stationary Engineer course from an accredited vocational/technical school or community college, and two years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of stationary or marine high-pressure boilers and heating systems
- One year of State service as a Stationary Engineer 1

- Ability to safely work from ladders or elevated platforms, including in high ambient temperature environments
- Proficiency in using personal computers and Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact respectfully and effectively with individuals who have limited sensory and physical abilities
- Demonstrated commitment to treating all individuals with dignity, respect, and cultural sensitivity
- Able to collaborate professionally with coworkers from diverse backgrounds
- Flexibility and responsiveness to address facility maintenance needs, including after-hours and emergent situations

Pay
The salary range for this position is Step M, with the high end of the range typically being a longevity step.
Schedule
This position is expected to work full-time in a temporary capacity during the initial six months or longer, transitioning to on-call status with shifts scheduled as needed, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
