Drafting Intern

Gridworks is seeking a Drafting Intern to join our Electrical Design Drafting team in Albuquerque, NM. This part-time, hourly role focuses on timely design development drafting for utility-scale solar (PV) and battery energy storage projects.

About the Role

As a Drafting Intern, you will take projects from early design development to installation, emphasizing accuracy, attention to detail, and efficiency in the commercial construction process. You will collaborate closely with our design engineering team, construction managers, and project managers to perform technical design and specification tasks.

Responsibilities

• Create detailed 2D and 3D drawings, models, and layouts based on project specifications for utility-scale solar and/or energy storage systems.
• Convert initial concepts, sketches, or hand-drawn designs into accurate CAD representations.
• Build detailed bills of materials (BOM) based on system specifications with support from the electrical design engineer.
• Utilize CAD software tools (e.g., AutoCAD) proficiently to produce and modify designs, staying updated with the latest software features.
• Work closely with engineers and other team members to ensure accurate representation and implementation of designs.
• Coordinate design interfaces with other engineering disciplines (civil, structural, SCADA/EMS, fire detection, substation, etc.) to achieve cross-discipline alignment.
• Communicate effectively to clarify requirements, address design-related queries, and provide solutions to design challenges.
• Review drawings and models for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with code and industry standards.
• Maintain organized documentation of CAD files, design revisions, and project updates, ensuring accessibility and version control.
• Identify and resolve discrepancies or inconsistencies in design specifications and assist in troubleshooting technical issues.
• Stay informed about the latest CAD technologies, techniques, and best practices, including NEC code changes applicable to solar (PV) and BESS projects.
• Participate in training programs, workshops, or certifications to enhance CAD skills and proficiency.

Work Environment

The ideal candidate should be physically able to sit in front of a computer for long hours. This role operates in the Albuquerque main office and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and headsets. Work can be fast-paced and demanding during peak project development seasons.

Physical Demands

This is largely a sedentary role in an office environment. The position may require lifting files, opening filing cabinets, and occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, or standing. Manual dexterity is necessary to operate office equipment.

Qualifications

• Familiarity with CAD software tools such as AutoCAD, Civil3D, or SketchUp.
• Strong organizational skills and willingness to adapt to dynamic workflows and project needs.
• Preferred experience in preparing and presenting client-ready technical documents.
• Experience with construction drawings is a plus.
• Expert knowledge in Excel and fluency in math and geometry.
• Experience in solar power and/or BESS designs is advantageous.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in design work.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Ability to manage time and workload to meet project deadlines.
• Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to CAD drafting.
• Understanding of NEC sections applicable to solar (PV) and BESS project designs.
