Drafter II

About the role

This position is responsible for creating detailed technical drawings with computer-aided design (CAD) software based on rough sketches, specifications and calculations from engineers. Designs feature the relationship between various tank car mechanical parts and systems along with information about the materials to be used in production, as well as dimensions of the product being manufactured.

Responsibilities

• Create detailed drawings and models from verbal and written specifications that are obtained from the Designer, Project Leader, Project Engineer or Drafting Manager.
• Research and review drawing files and other sources such as manufacturers catalogs, customer specification sheets and Union Tank Car Design Manual.
• Plans and prepares preliminary designs and specifications, working with both 3D and 2D design, ensuring adherence to company and industry standards.
• Calculate and specify dimensions, weight limitations and requirements in materials.
• Resolve any potential issues and redesigns to improve functionality.
• Develop 2D drawings by analyzing prototypes and 3D models.
• Finalize design by checking dimension of parts, materials to be used, relation of one part to another, and relation of various parts to whole structure or project.
• Ensure final design complies with regulations and quality standards.
• Prepare and present drawings for final review.
• Maintains project drawing files, associated records and documentation.
• Complete project responsibilities within scope, budget and schedule.
• Provide timely technical assistance and solutions to the team.
• Participate in and actively supports quality projects, activities and Responsible Care initiatives to ensure that the Company achieves its goals.
• Provide a leadership/mentor role to our drafters.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Associate’s degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design or related field
• Minimum of 5 years’ relevant work experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
• Hands-on experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software
• Familiarity with 3D modeling tools

Pay

Compensation is commensurate with experience.

Schedule

Must comply with all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety protocols
On-site work arrangement: 5 days a week, with the ability and availability to work overtime as operational needs require.
