Qualifications

  • Currently certified as an instructor in a specialty area by a nationally recognized vocational training program and experience equivalent to two years of full-time work instructing a specialty area.
  • OR Possession of a certification in a specialty area by a nationally recognized vocational training program and 5 years of experience.

For uncertified instructor applicants, this position requires the incumbent to enroll in a certified instructional program within the first six months of employment and to be completed within two years after employment begins.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and Deliver Instruction: Develops and implements engaging lesson plans and hands-on training that prepare students for high-skill, high-wage careers that align with standards; adapts instruction to meet diverse learning needs and incorporates industry-relevant tools, techniques, and safety protocols.
  • Assess and Support Student Progress: Evaluates student learning through formative and summative assessments, maintains accurate academic records, updates training plans, and provides individualized academic and career guidance to support successful reentry.
  • Manage Classroom Environment: Establishes and maintains a safe, orderly, and disciplined learning environment; enforces tool control and safety procedures in classrooms, shops, and work sites in accordance with TDOC policy.
  • Maintain Industry and Instructional Standards: Stays current with industry trends and technologies; maintains required industry certifications; evaluates, selects, and updates instructional materials and curriculum to align with labor-market needs and post-secondary pathways.
  • Coordinate Testing and Data Reporting: Oversees scheduling, administration, and compliance of testing; accurately inputs student data into Offender Management System and prepares required reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate and Communicate: Works closely with counselors, facility staff, and education personnel to support student success and program improvement; participates in advisory meetings, professional development, audits, and graduation ceremonies.
  • Promote CTE Programs and Career Readiness: Fosters awareness of CTE programs through student recruitment and career guidance; instructs students in employability, job-seeking, and job retention skills aligned with regional workforce needs.
  • Engage in Professional Development: Attends training workshops and educational conferences to maintain and improve professional competence.
