About the role
The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) seeks a DJS Community Detention Officer Supervisor to join our team. This role involves supervising youth in a community detention program, ensuring their safety and adherence to court orders, and maintaining effective communication with law enforcement and other stakeholders.
Responsibilities
- Assigning caseloads and regional boundaries to ensure effective youth supervision and balanced workloads
- Working closely with Community Detention Officers to ensure appropriate and timely responses to youth noncompliance
- Processing detention admissions related to noncompliance and public safety concerns for Director approval
- Maintaining accountability of all assigned equipment in coordination with the Inventory Specialist
- Reviewing and approving court reports prior to submission to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Meting regularly with supervised staff to review program operations, documentation, case activity, and compliance requirements, including vehicle inspections and caseload management
- Attending bi-weekly supervisor meetings to support program alignment and communication
- Preparing reports for leadership regarding youth program adjustments and related needs
Requirements
- Three years of experience providing supervision and guidance to juveniles in a court ordered community or home detention program
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field (preferred)
- Experience supervising staff responsible for monitoring youth under court-ordered supervision, including assigning work and overseeing performance
- Experience coordinating responses to youth noncompliance, including evaluating violations and initiating or recommending detention or other enforcement actions
- Experience reviewing and approving court reports or case documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance
Qualifications
- Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation
- Experience: Three years of experience providing supervision and guidance to juveniles in a court ordered community or home detention program
- Candidates may substitute two years of experience providing supervision and guidance to youth in a juvenile facility or juvenile services community program for one year of the required experience
- Candidates may substitute possession of an Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice or the social or behavioral sciences or sixty credit hours from an accredited college or university, including 15 credit hours in criminal justice or the social of behavioral sciences for one year of the required experience
- Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Correctional Officer classifications or Correctional Officer specialty codes in the Miscellaneous Occupations field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience
