District Sign Specialist 1-2
This position is located in the DOTD District 04 Traffic Operations Section.
About the role
The General duties of this position are to perform basic sign installation, replacement, and maintenance on all State and Federal Highways, in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and La. DOTD's Traffic Engineering Manual when necessary. This position serves as a District Sign Specialist 1 or District Sign Specialist 2.
The incumbent will be on an after-hours worksheet for emergencies, perform duties in all types of weather, possess a Class "D" Chauffeur's License, be able to lift up to 40 pounds, perform minor maintenance on their work truck, and use hydraulic and engine-driven post drivers. The incumbent is required to assist in setting up and closing roads for bridge repairs, interstates for snow and ice events, and other emergencies, as well as assist other sign crews with larger and more complex jobs.
The incumbent will make minor repairs and perform necessary maintenance on equipment and vehicles, and operate computers, PDAs, and other electronic devices to create and maintain daily work orders.
Responsibilities
- Performs all sign installation, replacement, and maintenance on all State and Federal Highways in accordance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), including highway signing, construction signing, road closures, barricades, warning, and other permanent and temporary signing.
- Helps determine the exact placement of signs based on field conditions for speed zones, weight limits, and other regulatory signing by interpreting legal orders (signed by the Chief Engineer).
- Maintains daily work orders (including GPS readings of sign locations), material usage reports, and truck inventory using PDAs and other electronic devices.
- Installs barricades as needed for traffic control assignments, cleans signs, and performs discriminative tree and limb cutting to clear obscured signs to provide required sign distances.
- Obtains training listed in PPM# 59 for this position and any additional training required by the Section Head or Highway Foreman.
- Performs miscellaneous duties to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the crew, such as entering PDA and/or GPS data into the database.
- May be required to perform other duties as necessary, including emergency/disaster support activities.

Pay
- District Sign Specialist 1: $17.18 per hour
- District Sign Specialist 2: $19.67 per hour
