District Manager
About the Role
Responsible for operational and execution excellence within a district, including daily living, retail pharmacy, home care, clinics, specialty pharmacy, and other business units. Facilitates a cohesive team culture across Walgreens businesses to drive patient health outcomes, business growth, and corporate initiatives. Provides coaching and guidance to Store Managers and Pharmacy Managers to enhance employee engagement, performance, and leadership development. Ensures managers have resources to improve sales, profitability, and store image through merchandising, asset protection, and team development. Delivers a high-quality, distinctive customer experience through store engagement and a deep understanding of district dynamics. Drives operational excellence in front-end and pharmacy operations aligned with One Plan, builds team effectiveness, and champions customer and patient experience improvements.
Responsibilities
- Customer Experience
- Executes the One Plan strategy to ensure consistency and excellence in customer experience.
- Provides feedback, training, and coaching; develops action plans for improvement.
- Shares best practices for delivering a distinctive customer experience, including interpersonal habits and Walgreens service traits.
- Resolves customer complaints for both pharmacy and front-end operations and addresses special customer needs.
- Operations
- Supervises assigned stores and conducts routine store visits.
- Leads district execution of front-end and pharmacy initiatives in partnership with District Pharmacy Supervisor (DPS) and Regional Vice President (RVP).
- Drives operational excellence through collaboration with Store and Pharmacy Managers.
- Supports Store Managers in executing market strategies at the store level.
- Provides recommendations on merchandising and inventory optimization to the Regional Vice President.
- Offers input on product assortment, promotional pricing, advertising, and display execution.
- Makes recommendations on local buys, promo pricing, vendor selection, and assortment.
- Ensures in-store execution and compliance with merchandising strategy.
- Coaches Pharmacy Managers to drive excellence in pharmacy operations and supports pharmacy programs.
- Acts as the first point of contact for non-clinical pharmacy issues.
- Develops and organizes community events and builds relationships with key community organizations.
- Collaborates with Store Managers to drive community events.
- Monitors and approves employee pay rates and increases.
- Ensures strict compliance with laws and regulations for the sale of alcohol, tobacco, fresh food, and pharmacy products.
- Business Performance Management
- Prepares for and attends area meetings.
- Understands key financial metrics and provides input on profit/loss and exceptions for district planning.
- Directs Store Managers to contribute to plans improving business performance.
- Conducts regular update meetings with Store Managers to evaluate performance.
- Facilitates collaboration between Store Managers to share best practices.
- Business Planning
- Executes local healthcare strategy as developed by the Regional Vice President and District Pharmacy Supervisor.
- Implements improvement plans for underperforming stores in collaboration with the Regional Vice President.
- People & Performance Management
- Executes the Region-level recruitment strategy and assists with hiring and staffing for Emerging Store Managers.
- Monitors pharmacy staffing needs and collaborates with DPS to address gaps.
- Ensures sufficient staffing resources and controlled payroll expenses.
- Coaches and develops Store and Pharmacy Managers to drive engagement and performance while protecting their capacity.
- Identifies low-performing Store Managers and ensures coaching and performance management.
- Works with Human Resources to implement corporate training strategies for team development.
- Drives the performance management process for Store Managers.
- Provides feedback on Pharmacy Manager reviews to Store Managers.
- Takes action on recommendations from Employee Relations and Human Resources regarding team performance.
- Promotes teamwork by establishing expectations, tracking results, and sharing vision.
- Ensures compliance with corporate policies and employment laws, treating all team members fairly.
- Ensures compliance on non-clinical quality-related events through coaching, training, and resolution.
- Champions and owns change at the district level for new initiatives.
- Training & Personal Development
- Participates in training and supports training efforts as needed.
- Seeks opportunities for management and leadership training.
- Pursues self-development by monitoring performance, setting high standards, and sharing best practices.
- Communications
- Cascades information from conference calls, area meetings, and corporate initiatives to direct and indirect reports.
- Reviews and cascades emails from the Support Center and Regional Vice Presidents to Store Managers.
- Communicates regularly with managers and team members through discussions, meetings, and written updates to ensure open communication.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree and 5 years of retail management experience or High School Diploma/GED and 7 years of retail management experience.
- Licensed pharmacy technician as required by state or licensed RPh within 12 months of start date (external candidates).
- Valid driver's license.
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including extended days, evenings, and weekends.
- Willingness to travel 85% of the time for business purposes (within district/state).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- PTCB or ExCPT Certification.
- Experience as a Tier three or higher Store Manager or transitioned from Store Management to Walgreens corporate leadership (internal candidates).
- Experience managing multiple retail or pharmacy units.

Pay
Salary Range: $105,000 - $150,000 per year (salaried). The actual salary offered will depend on factors including geography, skills, education, and experience.
