About the Role
Leads a team of three or more workers in trades and labor tasks, ensuring efficient workflow and compliance with procedures. Balances supervisory duties with hands-on participation in warehouse operations.
Responsibilities
- Direct and instruct workers on tasks, ensuring adequate workload distribution.
- Monitor work in progress and completed tasks for compliance with procedures, policies, and instructions.
- Answer workers' questions regarding operational guidelines and report progress to supervisors.
- Perform non-lead duties including stock selection, stowing, location surveys, physical inventory, material handling, and packing.
- Receive, unload, and process incoming shipments, verifying documentation against container labels.
- Report discrepancies such as overages, shortages, misdirected, or damaged materials.
- Pack and repack items using standard materials and techniques, selecting appropriate methods based on commodity type.
- Assemble items for shipment according to shipping requests, ensuring proper loading onto conveyances.
- Conduct inventory counts, maintain tally listings, and assist in resolving discrepancies.
- Operate material handling equipment (MHE) such as forklifts (up to 15,000 lbs capacity), warehouse tractors, or general-purpose vehicles.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Non-sensitive position; appointment subject to favorable suitability or fitness determination.
- Non-Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
- Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license.
- Must obtain and maintain any required installation, federal, state, or local licenses/certifications.
- Pre-employment physical required.
- Must possess or obtain a REAL ID or acceptable identification for federal facility access.
- Position may involve shift work within DLA Distribution Norfolk, VA.
Qualifications
Applicants are evaluated based on their ability to perform the duties with minimal supervision, as outlined in the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Emphasis is placed on the quality of experience and demonstrated skills rather than the length of time. The screen-out element for this role is the ability to lead and instruct workers on less complex tasks, refer to manuals for guidance, and adhere to safety standards.
Experience includes paid and unpaid roles, such as volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) or other organizations.
Physical Effort
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, driving MHE, climbing stairs/steps, reaching overhead, and using finger/hand/eye coordination.
- Occasional sitting, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing ladders, and throwing items up to 5 pounds.
- Frequent lifting of items up to 40 pounds from floor to waist level (6 inches to 3 feet) and waist to shoulder level (2 feet to 6 feet).
- Frequent carrying of items up to 40 pounds for 6–10 feet.
- Occasional pushing/pulling of items up to 80-foot pounds for approximately 3 feet.
- Use of weight-handling equipment or assistance from coworkers for items over 40 pounds.
- Work performed in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
Working Conditions
- Works in indoor and outdoor environments that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, or poorly lit.
- Exposed to hazards such as cuts, scrapes, bruises, muscle strain, noise, abrasions, falls, and injury from falling stock.
- Required to wear protective clothing, including steel-toed shoes, respirators, safety glasses, and earplugs.
- Mechanized roller conveyors are a normal part of material routing and distribution.
