About the role

DIS-TRAN Steel is looking to add a Safety Specialist to join the team at the Pineville Plant. The Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of all Dis-Tran employees, confirming compliance with all state and federal regulations. This position plans, implements, and coordinates safety programs, applying engineering principles and technology to prevent or correct unsafe environmental working conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the review of current policies and training programs to provide continuous improvements
  • Initiates and develops company policies and procedures that maintain safety measures throughout the organization
  • Provides support by leading implementation of policies and procedures
  • Makes recommendations for projects or safety programs for approval by company leadership; receives directions for implementation
  • Administers the DIS-TRAN safety program with the goal of reducing the number and severity of plant accidents and injuries
  • Provides written or verbal reports to the Director of Human Resources and company presidents with updates on safety and loss control programs, accidents, and injury status
  • Surveys current safety literature and attends relevant seminars and meetings to ensure ongoing preparedness on safety improvement and hazard prevention
  • Organizes and chairs the monthly Managers Safety Meeting
  • Monitors and maintains compliance with all government safety regulations as well as corporate policies and procedures
  • Maintains a system for reporting, monitoring, and correcting all safety problems
  • Tracks all events for Plant management evaluations and reports quarterly on findings
  • Responsible for Plant OSHA recordkeeping and reporting
  • Ensures all state, federal, and local safety laws, regulations, codes, and rules are posted and observed
  • Assists Plant management in administering all corrective actions as dictated by company policy
  • Recommends alternative actions based on available industry information to Plant management
  • Coordinates action plans with outside consultants for best practices and reports these plans to Plant management and corporate Human Resources
  • Performs all new employees’ safety orientation classes at the Plant
  • Takes lead in organizing training and support to ensure the well-being of all employees, customers, and the community
  • Trains, counsels, and advises supervisors and lead personnel on all safety issues through management safety bulletins, newsletters, memos, and meetings
  • Assists supervisors in training personnel for general safety and specific plant operations
  • Organizes and provides training for emergency events or disasters as required by insurance carriers
  • Establishes routine inspection plans for supervisors, lead personnel, and employees for all work areas
  • Coordinates remedies for any safety violations or concerns
  • Coordinates all Plant inspections and reports conditions that pose potential safety problems to management
  • Participates in formal inspections of Plant safety with outside groups and issues reports documenting corrective actions taken
  • Ensures corrective action is initiated by the responsible supervisor and assists in establishing priorities and procedures
  • Evaluates and administers company safety incentive programs as directed by management
  • Monitors and advises on controls for industrial hygiene, including chemical exposure, noise, lighting, heat, humidity, and radiation
  • Assists supervisors in dispensing first aid and safety-related goods
  • Evaluates all safety equipment at the Plant site with management
  • Supports the DIS-TRAN Plant Environmental Manager by training in key areas as needed

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a safety-related discipline preferred
  • At least three years of experience in industrial safety and industrial hygiene required
  • Knowledge of state, federal, and local industrial health and safety regulations and programs (OSHA, PPE, etc.)
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred
  • Epicor experience preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access required
  • Regular, reliable attendance is required
