About the role

We are seeking a visionary and results-driven Director of User Experience Design to lead the Salesforce Developer Experience (DX) Design team. In this high-impact leadership role, you will define and execute the end-to-end design strategy for Salesforce’s suite of professional developer tools.

Responsibilities

  • Hands-On UX Leadership & Technical Vision
    • Formulate a multi-year user experience strategy for Salesforce Developer Tools, establishing a unified ecosystem across CLI, IDE extensions, cloud sandboxes, and AI-assisted canvases.
    • Partner with Product Managers, Software Engineers, and User Experience Designers to translate high-level UX vision into technically feasible, performant code architectures.
    • Build Instant Technical Trust: Partner with Product Managers, Software Engineers, and User Experience Designers to translate high-level UX vision into technically feasible, performant code architectures.
    • Lead by Doing: Balance strategic management with hands-on output. Actively build code-backed prototypes, conduct design and tech spikes, and experiment directly with emerging developer tooling patterns.
  • AI-Native Tooling & Agentic Innovation
    • Pioneer AI-Driven Dev Tooling: Draw on deep, recent experience working with state-of-the-art AI tech, modern LLMs, and developer tooling integrations to shape Agentforce Vibes and other developer tools.
    • Design Human-Agent Interaction: Lead the paradigm shift for autonomous agentic workflows, prompt-to-code interfaces, context-aware inline assistance, and human-in-the-loop developer experiences.
    • Model Best Practices: Establish modern, AI-fluent design workflows within your team, demonstrating how generative tools and intelligent agents accelerate design-to-development cycles.
  • Team Building, Coaching & Operational Excellence
    • Mentor & Empower: Recruit, mentor, and retain a high-performing team of Product Designers, hybrid Design-Technologists, and User Researchers.
    • Design System Integration: Partner with the Salesforce Lightning Design System (SLDS) team to define specialized UI patterns and component libraries tailored for code editors, terminal interfaces, and canvas workflows.
    • Research & Developer Empathy: Oversee qualitative and quantitative developer research, while personally staying close to developer workflows to eliminate cognitive friction for everyone from junior developers to enterprise architects.

Requirements

  • Hybrid Designer and Developer Expertise: Formal training and professional experience in both UX/Product Design and Software Development (e.g., degree in HCI/CS or dual career path as a Designer & Front-End/Full-Stack Engineer).
  • 10+ years of total experience in UX Design, Product Design, or Developer Tooling.
  • 5+ years in a direct people management/leadership role overseeing design teams, with a proven track record as an active "leader/doer."
  • Proven AI Fluency: 2+ years of hands-on experience actively building with, designing for, or developing against modern AI tools, LLMs, AI coding assistants, or agentic frameworks.
  • Developer Domain and Persona Expertise: Deep familiarity with developer jobs to be done (JTBD), workflows, mental models, and daily toolchains (IDE extensions, Git, CLI, CI/CD pipelines, APIs, and cloud platform environments).
  • Lead by Example with Hands-On Prototyping: Ability to write code to create high-fidelity, interactive prototypes to demonstrate UX vision to executive stakeholders and engineering partners.
  • Portfolio Required: Must show examples of design leadership, team mentorship, hands-on technical/coded artifacts, complex systems design, and AI-driven interfaces.
  • A related technical degree required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with the Salesforce Developer Ecosystem (Apex, Lightning Web Components, Salesforce DX, Metadata API, Data Cloud).
  • Active track record of contributing to developer tools, VS Code extensions, or open-source developer projects.
