Director, UC Davis Flow Cytometry Shared Resource
About the role
The Director (Academic Program Management Supervisor 2) leads the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource (FCSR), a self-supporting, interdisciplinary research support program serving a broad faculty user base across the Davis and Sacramento campuses.
Responsibilities
25% - Supervision; laboratory research, instruction and experimental design. Advanced and highly specific knowledge and expertise associated with conducting and reporting on scientific research experiments and findings.
25% - Supervise the activities of career Technicians and undergraduate student laboratory support technicians.
10% - Budget Development and Resource Analysis
5% - Grant & Proposal Writing for Equipment and Operational Funding
5% - Marketing and Training Activities
5% - Laboratory Management Responsibilities/Laboratory Stewardship
5% - Contribution towards articles for publication in scientific journals or for presentations at conferences or symposiums.
Requirements
M.S. or higher degree with ten or more years of experience and expertise in flow cytometry and immunological assays.
Significant expertise in scientific technology and flow cytometry with an understanding of the impact of technology on research efforts.
Previous interactions with scientific operations.
Experience directing the research activities of junior personnel.
Expertise operating and maintaining complex research instrumentation, developing new flow cytometry research methodologies, and analyzing complex, multi-parameter data sets.
Ability to communicate advanced flow cytometry theory and practice clearly to faculty and post-graduate researchers, and to summarize and present data sets in meetings with faculty and senior administrative officers.
Ability to supervise and manage junior lab personnel, including overseeing their experiment planning, data analysis, cell sorting activities, instrument operation, and laboratory maintenance.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, along with strong organizational and management skills.
Qualifications
Doctorate in related area and / or equivalent experience training.
Demonstrated record of flow cytometry–focused research publications utilizing multi-parameter and spectral cytometry techniques.
Sufficient analytic skills to develop procedures that streamline cytometer operation and assist UC Davis administrators and facility leadership with budget planning and usage reporting.
Ability to lead organizational change and audit and interpret results diplomatically.
Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with a broad range of individuals — including junior personnel, students, and faculty — and experience managing multiple concurrent projects.
Skills
Advanced knowledge of flow cytometry instrument design, including the physics of optical properties of light, digital and analog electronic processing, and fluidic sorting systems.
Significant expertise operating and maintaining complex research instrumentation.
Technical expertise and scientific knowledge; advanced experiment analysis.
Ability to communicate advanced flow cytometry theory and practice clearly to faculty and post-graduate researchers.
