The Director, PKI Operations role is a strategic leadership opportunity for an experienced cybersecurity professional to oversee mission-critical Public Key Infrastructure operations at global scale. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Lead the strategy, governance, and day-to-day operations of enterprise PKI and Certificate Authority (CA) environments.
  2. Oversee CA hierarchy management, Hardware Security Module (HSM) administration, and execution of key ceremonies.
  3. Ensure the continuous availability, integrity, and security of PKI services while maintaining compliance with industry regulations and trust frameworks.
  4. Build, mentor, and scale high-performing PKI operations teams across multiple regions and time zones.
  5. Drive automation and operational efficiency across certificate issuance, renewal, revocation, monitoring, and lifecycle management processes.
  6. Partner with engineering, product, and compliance teams to support new PKI capabilities and evolving security requirements.
  7. Lead internal and external audits, manage remediation activities, and maintain audit readiness.
  8. Develop and maintain PKI documentation, including policies, procedures, Certificate Policies (CP), and Certificate Practice Statements (CPS).
  9. Define and enforce disaster recovery and business continuity strategies for PKI and HSM infrastructure.
  10. Act as the senior escalation point for complex PKI incidents and customer-impacting security issues.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in PKI, information security, cybersecurity infrastructure, or related fields, including at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Deep hands-on expertise with Certificate Authority operations, X.509 certificates, HSM technologies, OCSP, CRL, and ACME protocols.
  • Strong knowledge of PKI standards and frameworks, including CA/Browser Forum Baseline Requirements, WebTrust for CAs, RFC 5280, and related compliance requirements.
  • Proven experience leading PKI audits and collaborating with external auditors and regulatory bodies.
  • Demonstrated success managing globally distributed teams within 24/7 operational environments.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to executive and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with cloud-based PKI environments across AWS, Azure, and/or Google Cloud Platform is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with PKI automation tools and modern security infrastructure practices.
  • Strong analytical mindset, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to operational excellence.
