The Director, PKI Operations role is a strategic leadership opportunity for an experienced cybersecurity professional to oversee mission-critical Public Key Infrastructure operations at global scale. Key responsibilities include:
- Lead the strategy, governance, and day-to-day operations of enterprise PKI and Certificate Authority (CA) environments.
- Oversee CA hierarchy management, Hardware Security Module (HSM) administration, and execution of key ceremonies.
- Ensure the continuous availability, integrity, and security of PKI services while maintaining compliance with industry regulations and trust frameworks.
- Build, mentor, and scale high-performing PKI operations teams across multiple regions and time zones.
- Drive automation and operational efficiency across certificate issuance, renewal, revocation, monitoring, and lifecycle management processes.
- Partner with engineering, product, and compliance teams to support new PKI capabilities and evolving security requirements.
- Lead internal and external audits, manage remediation activities, and maintain audit readiness.
- Develop and maintain PKI documentation, including policies, procedures, Certificate Policies (CP), and Certificate Practice Statements (CPS).
- Define and enforce disaster recovery and business continuity strategies for PKI and HSM infrastructure.
- Act as the senior escalation point for complex PKI incidents and customer-impacting security issues.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in PKI, information security, cybersecurity infrastructure, or related fields, including at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- Deep hands-on expertise with Certificate Authority operations, X.509 certificates, HSM technologies, OCSP, CRL, and ACME protocols.
- Strong knowledge of PKI standards and frameworks, including CA/Browser Forum Baseline Requirements, WebTrust for CAs, RFC 5280, and related compliance requirements.
- Proven experience leading PKI audits and collaborating with external auditors and regulatory bodies.
- Demonstrated success managing globally distributed teams within 24/7 operational environments.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to executive and non-technical audiences.
- Experience with cloud-based PKI environments across AWS, Azure, and/or Google Cloud Platform is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with PKI automation tools and modern security infrastructure practices.
- Strong analytical mindset, problem-solving abilities, and commitment to operational excellence.
