Director of Nursing (RN)

About the Role
This is a salaried position with normal business hours worked in the building and an on-call schedule. There is an occasional need for after-hours availability. The Director of Nursing serves as the primary on-call for the nursing department Monday through Friday, must be able to take emergency calls 24 hours a day, and participates in a weekend on-call rotation every 5 weekends.
Responsibilities
- Plans, organizes, develops, and directs the overall operation of the nursing department in accordance with federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations to ensure the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.
- Maintains the nursing schedule, coordinates time off and coverage, and serves as a back-up for call-ins or staffing concerns.
- Approves overtime and obtains prior approval from the Executive Administrator; meets and exceeds goals for overtime.
- Calculates the number of direct nursing care to resident ratios each day; meets goals set for PPD ratios.
- Ensures the community is fully staffed for all shifts providing the highest quality of resident care.
- Develops, maintains, and periodically updates written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing department, as well as an ongoing quality assurance program.
- Maintains a reference library of written nursing materials (Regulations, Standards of Practice, Training, etc.) to assist the nursing department in meeting resident needs.
- Makes written and oral reports/recommendations to the Administrator concerning the operation of the nursing department.
- Develops methods for coordination of nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of care.
- Assists in developing and delivering training for nursing department staff and all community staff.
- Serves as the primary/immediate contact when resident abuse, neglect, and/or exploitation is suspected; conducts investigations with a team and reports findings to the Kansas Department on Aging.
- Oversees the delivery of quality care and services to residents and maintains a safe working environment.
- Works closely with the Infection Preventionist for infection control policies, procedures, and coaching.
- Collaborates with the Director of Human Resources for evaluating, disciplining, coaching, and educating employees.
- Works closely with pharmacy, Team Health, and other vendors involved in resident care.
- Serves on, participates in, and leads various community committees.
- Interviews and selects new nursing department employees.
- Leads and develops staff, including nurses, aides, nurse managers, and MDS coordinators; completes coaching and annual performance reviews.
- Works with Human Resources on retention planning.
- Promotes the physical, personal, and emotional well-being of each resident.
- Reviews and resolves resident and family complaints/grievances; meets with residents and families as needed.
- Conducts routine rounds throughout the facility to ensure nursing employees are compliant with policies/regulations and the highest level of resident care is provided.
- Provides nursing care as necessary.
- Serves as second in command when the Executive Administrator is unavailable.
- Reviews the nursing budget weekly to ensure adherence to the provided budget.
- Stays abreast of economic conditions, regulations, and nursing standards to ensure continued ability to provide quality care.
- Ensures nursing staff are compliant on all required training and regulatory documentation.
- Facilitates effective communication within the community and contributes to creating an effective interdisciplinary team.
- Takes initiative in conflict resolution for residents, families, staff, and others as needed.
- Participates in staff appreciation events and marketing events as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Nursing Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Current, unencumbered active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Kansas.
- Previous long-term care experience required.
- Previous supervisory experience required; experience leading large teams of staff and managers is highly preferred.

- Must highly value teamwork within the nursing department and on the interdisciplinary team.
- Highest level of professionalism and confidentiality required.

- Experience in leading a team and maintaining positive employee relations.
- Works in office areas and throughout the building, subject to frequent interruptions and involvement with residents, staff, visitors, government agencies, etc., under all conditions and circumstances.
- Subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, staff, and visitors.
